Overview

The prEN IEC 60297-3-102:2025 standard specifies mechanical dimensions for injector/extractor handles used in electronic equipment structures within the 482.6 mm (19 inch) series. Published by the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CLC) and aligned with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), this standard supports the design and manufacturing of mechanical interfaces facilitating the insertion and extraction of electronic plug-in units and printed board modules in subracks.

This document is part of the IEC 60297 series, focusing specifically on additional interface dimensions required for injector/extractor handles, enhancing the modular design and interoperability of racks and equipment front panels. It builds on earlier versions, presenting a user-oriented update improving clarity on interface dimensions and definitions essential for consistent mechanical construction.

Key Topics

  • Injector/Extractor Handles: Defines dimensions and arrangements for handles mounted either on front panels of plug-in units or directly on printed boards inside subrack filler panels.
  • Subrack Interface Dimensions: Specifies aperture heights and receptacle placements needed for proper functionality of injector/extractor handles in the subrack’s front mounting area.
  • Plug-in Unit Interface Dimensions: Details permissible widths and spatial tolerances for injector/extractor handles, ensuring they fit within horizontal pitch boundaries while avoiding interference with component spaces.
  • Printed Board Mounting: Covers separate interface requirements for printed board-mounted injector/extractor handles differing from typical plug-in unit front panel handles. Highlights incompatibility with full-width subrack use.
  • Standards Integration: Complements IEC 60297-3-101 (subracks and associated plug-in units) and IEC TR 60297-3-1:2023 (technological schemes and applications), offering precise mechanical specs for advanced front panel handle designs.

Applications

The IEC 60297-3-102:2025 standard is practical for:

  • Electrical and Electronic Equipment Manufacturers: Ensuring front panel handles for plug-in units conform to international mechanical size and mounting interface expectations, facilitating compatibility across multiple devices and systems.
  • Rack System Design and Assembly: Supporting engineers in designing subracks with proper injector/extractor handle receptacles to improve ease of module insertion and removal.
  • Standardization Committees and Consultants: Providing a clear reference for defining modular rack interfaces, enabling interoperability across manufacturers and reducing design ambiguities.
  • Maintenance and Servicing Teams: Utilizing standardized handles for safe and efficient extraction/insertion of electronic components, enhancing reliability and reducing downtime.
  • OEMs and System Integrators: Applying consistent mechanical structures in computer bus systems, telecom equipment, industrial control panels, and other 19-inch rack frame installations.

Related Standards

  • IEC 60297-3-1:2023 – Technological schemes for mechanical structures of the 482.6 mm (19 in) series.
  • IEC 60297-3-101 – Subracks and associated plug-in units for 19-inch systems.
  • IEC 60917-1 – Modular order for developing mechanical structures for electrical/electronic equipment.
  • IEC TR 60297-3-1:2023 – Technical report clarifying extended specifications for conventional 19-inch subrack systems.
  • IEC 60603-2 – Connectors for electronic plug-in units.

Summary

Adherence to prEN IEC 60297-3-102:2025 ensures consistent mechanical performance and compatibility of injector/extractor handles used in 19-inch electronic equipment structures. Its precise definition of interface dimensions makes it indispensable for designers and manufacturers focused on modularity, ease of maintenance, and standardized rack assembly in a global market. This standard not only advances the legacy of the IEC 60297 series but also enhances practical usability across diverse electronics and electrical applications.

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization
comprising all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to
promote international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and
electronic fields. To this end and in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards,
Technical Specifications, Technical Reports, Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides
(hereafter referred to as "IEC Publication(s)"). Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees;
any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory
work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also
participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two
organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an
international consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has
representation from all interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC
National Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical
content of IEC Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are
used or for any misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC
Publications transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications.
Any divergence between any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication
shall be clearly indicated in the latter.
5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide
conformity assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not
responsible for any services carried out by independent certification bodies.
6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual
experts and members of its technical committees and IEC National Committees for any personal
injury, property damage or other damage of any nature whatsoever, whether direct or indirect, or for
