Overview
EN 61000-4-17:1999/A1:2004 is a key European standard developed by CENELEC (CLC) that addresses electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) for electrical and electronic equipment. Specifically, it outlines the testing and measurement techniques required to assess the immunity of equipment to ripple on DC input power ports. Amendment 1, published in 2004, introduces significant clarifications and updates, particularly regarding climatic conditions for testing, evaluation of test results, and requirements for comprehensive test reporting.
This standard is essential for manufacturers and testing laboratories that need to verify the resilience of their products against electromagnetic disturbances on DC power supplies, helping ensure reliable operation in various environments.
Key Topics
Climatic Conditions for Testing
- The amendment specifies that laboratory climatic conditions must fall within the operational limits defined by manufacturers of both equipment under test (EUT) and testing apparatus.
- Testing is not permitted if relative humidity is so high that it causes condensation on the EUT or test equipment, as this can affect test integrity.
- If climatic conditions are believed to influence test outcomes, this should be communicated to the relevant standards committee.
Evaluation of Test Results
- Test results must be categorized based on the impact on EUT function or performance, measured against performance criteria set by the manufacturer, test requester, or an agreed standard.
- The categories include:
- Normal performance within specified limits.
- Temporary loss or degradation of function, resolved automatically.
- Temporary loss or degradation of function, requiring operator intervention.
- Irrecoverable loss or degradation (e.g., hardware or software damage, data loss).
- Manufacturers may define acceptable insignificant effects for their products.
Test Report Documentation
- The new clause mandates comprehensive test reporting to ensure repeatability and transparency. Required elements include:
- Details from the test plan.
- Identification of the EUT and test equipment (brand, type, serial numbers).
- Environmental details and any special testing conditions.
- Defined performance levels and criteria.
- Observations related to the EUT, both during and after disturbance.
- Basis for pass/fail decisions.
- Specific use conditions, such as cabling or shielding details.
- The new clause mandates comprehensive test reporting to ensure repeatability and transparency. Required elements include:
Applications
Product Certification and Compliance
- Manufacturers of electronic devices that operate on DC power must comply with EMC immunity standards like EN 61000-4-17 to satisfy European market requirements and enhance product reliability.
Testing Laboratories
- Accredited laboratories utilize this standard as a guideline for conducting uniform and reliable immunity tests on products, ensuring test results withstand regulatory scrutiny.
Product Development
- Engineering teams integrate the testing procedures and reporting guidelines defined in this standard to validate equipment resilience early in the design phase, reducing future compliance risks.
Agreement on Performance Criteria
- When no applicable generic or product-family standard exists, this standard provides a recognized framework for manufacturers and purchasers to agree on product performance under EMC disturbances.

- EN 61000-4 Series (EMC Testing and Measurement Techniques)
- EN 61000-4-2 (Electrostatic discharge immunity test)
- EN 61000-4-3 (Radiated RF electromagnetic field immunity test)

- EN 61000-4-6 (Immunity to conducted disturbances)
- IEC 61000-4-17:1999/A1:2001
- International basis for the European amendment.
These related standards collectively ensure comprehensive EMC immunity testing for a variety of common electromagnetic disturbances, supporting effective product development and certification across different market sectors.
