Overview

EN 61000-4-17:1999/A1:2004 is a European standard under the Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) framework, published by CLC and aligned with IEC 61000-4-17:1999/A1:2001. This standard defines testing and measurement techniques specifically addressing the ripple immunity on direct current (d.c.) input power ports of electrical and electronic equipment. The amendment A1 introduces updates to climatic conditions in testing environments, evaluation criteria for test results, and mandates comprehensive test reporting.

Designed to ensure robust operation of equipment under ripple disturbances on the d.c. supply port, this standard plays a crucial role in product design, compliance testing, and quality assurance related to electromagnetic compatibility.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Amendments
The amendment revises Subclause 8.1.1 (Climatic conditions) and Clause 9 (Evaluation of test results), and adds a new Clause 10 (Test report).

  • Climatic Conditions (8.1.1)
Tests must be performed under climatic conditions within operational limits specified by equipment manufacturers. Relative humidity should not cause condensation on the equipment under test (EUT) or test devices to ensure valid and reproducible results.

  • Evaluation of Test Results (Clause 9)
Test outcomes are classified based on performance degradation:

    • Normal performance within specified limits
    • Temporary performance loss recoverable without operator intervention
    • Temporary loss requiring operator intervention
    • Permanent loss or damage to hardware/software
These classifications guide manufacturers and purchasers in agreeing on acceptable EMC performance levels.
  • Test Reporting (Clause 10)
The test report must include full details to enable test reproducibility and transparency:

    • Identification of EUT and test equipment (brand, model, serial number)
    • Environmental and operational conditions during testing
    • Defined performance level and criteria
    • Observed effects and their durations
    • Pass/fail rationale based on agreed-upon criteria
    • Specific use conditions required for compliance

Applications

EN 61000-4-17:1999/A1:2004 applies broadly to electrical and electronic devices powered from a d.c. input supply where ripple on the power line may impact system performance or reliability. Key application areas include:

  • Power supplies and converters for industrial, automotive, and consumer electronics
  • Telecommunications equipment operating with d.c. power inputs
  • Renewable energy devices utilizing d.c. input power ports
  • Control systems and instrumentation susceptible to power quality disturbances
  • Compliance testing in EMC laboratories to validate immunity to power supply ripple

Adhering to this standard ensures products maintain functionality and resist degradation caused by ripple disturbances, minimizing downtime and enhancing user confidence.

Related Standards

This standard is part of the wider IEC 61000 series on electromagnetic compatibility testing and measurement techniques. Related standards include:

  • EN 61000-4-2: Electrostatic discharge immunity test
  • EN 61000-4-3: Radiated radio-frequency electromagnetic field immunity test
  • EN 61000-4-6: Immunity to conducted disturbances induced by radio-frequency fields
  • EN 61000-4-11: Voltage dips, short interruptions and voltage variations immunity test

Together, these form a comprehensive EMC testing framework, helping manufacturers comply with European and international EMC directives and regulations.
