Overview
EN 61076-4-101:2001 (CLC) is a European detail specification for printed board connectors with assessed quality. It defines two-part connector modules with a basic grid of 2.0 mm for printed boards and backplanes in accordance with IEC 60917. This standard also carries the IEC Quality Assessment System designation QC 480301XX0002 (IECQ) and is part of the IEC/EN 61076 series for connectors used in d.c., low-frequency analogue and digital high‑speed data applications.
Key topics and technical requirements
The standard provides comprehensive technical and quality requirements for two-part connector modules, including:
- Mechanical dimensions and layout: grid patterns, module widths/height/depth, mounting and mating information for PCB and backplane integration.
- Contact arrangements and terminations: contact types, termination variants and contact dimensions suitable for solderless and press‑in applications.
- Engagement and coding: engagement sequence, mechanical coding methods and polarizing devices to prevent mis-mating.
- Mounting and assembly guidance: recommended board mounting, subrack/backplane coordination (IEC 60917 compatibility) and accessory interfaces.
- Performance characteristics: climatic category, electrical properties (contact resistance, insulation, voltage proof, current carrying capacity), and mechanical properties (engaging/separating forces, vibration, shock).
- Testing and quality assessment: detailed test schedules, sample/test arrangements, gauges, qualification approval methods, lot-by-lot and periodic inspection requirements under the IECQ system.
- Normative and informative annexes: normative references and informative guidance (e.g., special contacts, coding color references).
Applications and practical value
EN 61076-4-101 is used to ensure interoperability, reliability and assessed quality of printed board connectors in:
- Electronic equipment, plug-in units, subracks and backplanes
- d.c., low-frequency analogue systems and digital high-speed data interconnects
- PCB and system designers specifying connector footprints and mating interfaces
- Connector manufacturers and suppliers seeking IECQ/assessed quality acceptance
- Quality engineers and test laboratories performing compliance and qualification testing
Using this standard helps reduce design risk, ensures mechanical/electrical compatibility across products, and supports supplier quality control for end‑equipment manufacturers and system integrators.
Related standards
Relevant cross-references include:

FOREWORD
1) The IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of the IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, the IEC publishes International Standards. Their preparation is
entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with may
participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. The IEC collaborates closely with the International
Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the
two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of the IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an
international consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation
from all interested National Committees.
3) The documents produced have the form of recommendations for international use and are published in the form
of standards, technical specifications, technical reports or guides and they are accepted by the National
Committees in that sense.
4) In order to promote international unification, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC International
Standards transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional standards. Any
divergence between the IEC Standard and the corresponding national or regional standard shall be clearly
indicated in the latter.
5) The IEC provides no marking procedure to indicate its approval and cannot be rendered responsible for any
equipment declared to be in conformity with one of its standards.
6) Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this International Standard may be the subject
of patent rights. The IEC shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
International Standard IEC 61076-4-101 has been prepared by subcommittee 48B: Connectors, of
IEC technical committee 48: Electromechanical components and mechanical structures for
electronic equipment.
This second edition of IEC 61076-4-101 cancels and replaces the first edition, published in
1995, and constitutes a technical revision.
The text of this standard is based on the following documents:

1 General data
Throughout this specification dimensions are in millimetres.
1.1 Recommended method of mounting
A complete connector consists of one or more connector modules which are stackable end to
end, without loss of contact positions.
Guiding, coding, and mounting features are grouped in a multipurpose centre (called MPC
throughout this specification).
Free board connector modules are mounted on the edge of the printed circuit board and have
female contacts with angled press-in terminations.
Fixed board connector modules are mounted on the backplane and have male contacts with
straight press-in terminations with optional solderless wrapping and/or rear plug-up contacts.
The gap between the backplane and the edge of the printed board is 12,5 mm.
The contact row b on the backplane is in line with the reference plane "width" of the printed board.
The termination row a on the printed board lies 1,5 mm from the edge and 14 mm from the
backplane.
