Overview
EN 62841-2-17:2017/prAB:2024 is a draft amendment to the European safety standard for electric motor-operated hand-held tools, transportable tools, and lawn and garden machinery. Specifically, this part addresses the particular safety requirements for hand-held routers. Developed by the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC), this standard aims to enhance the safety of both corded and battery-operated hand-held routers, contributing to user protection and product reliability.
This amendment revises and clarifies key clauses related to power switches, battery isolation, disabling devices, and aligns compliance with essential requirements of the EU Machinery Directive (2006/42/EC).
Key Topics
- Safety of Hand-Held Routers: Focuses on safety measures to protect operators of electric motor-driven routers.
- Power Switch Requirements:
- Mandates momentary (non-locking) power switches or requires tools to not auto-restart after a power interruption.
- Battery-Powered Tool Safety:
- Requires isolation or disabling devices for battery routers to prevent accidental starts during servicing or maintenance.
- Isolation devices must provide clear indication and protection against accidental reconnection.
- Disabling devices must involve two deliberate, dissimilar actions to prevent inadvertent activation.
- Compliance with EU Machinery Directive:
- Updates requirements to meet safety, reliability, and handling criteria as per Directive 2006/42/EC.
- Servicing and User Maintenance:
- Reinforces disconnect features and lock-off mechanisms to reduce risk of injury when maintaining battery-powered routers.
Applications
EN 62841-2-17:2017/prAB:2024 is crucial for manufacturers, importers, and distributors of electric hand-held routers within the European market. Its applications include:
- Product Development and Certification:
- Manufacturers use the standard to design safer hand-held routers and ensure their products pass conformity assessments.
- Supports the CE marking process for compliance within the EU.
- Occupational Safety:
- Guides employers in selecting compliant routers to minimize workplace hazards and meet regulatory requirements.
- Market Access:
- Compliance with this standard is necessary for trade and market entry throughout the EU and EFTA countries.
- Technical Documentation and Instructions:
- Informs the development of user manuals, maintenance guidelines, and warning labels to ensure clear, accurate, and standardized safety messaging.
Related Standards
Several standards are closely related to EN 62841-2-17:2017/prAB:2024 and support broader safety and performance aspects for electric tools and machinery:
- EN 62841-1: General requirements for electric motor-operated hand-held tools, transportable tools, and lawn and garden machinery.
- EN 62841-2 Series: Addresses particular requirements for different classes of hand-held and transportable tools.
- IEC 62841-2-17: International equivalent detailing safety for hand-held routers.
- Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC: The main legislative framework covering the safety of machinery in the EU.
- EN 61029 Series: Safety requirements for transportable motor-operated electric tools.
- EN 60335 Series: Safety for household and similar electrical appliances.
Summary
Adhering to EN 62841-2-17:2017/prAB:2024 helps ensure that hand-held routers are designed with robust safety features, protecting users and facilitating smooth market access across Europe. By integrating the latest safety requirements, this standard supports manufacturers in building reliable electric tools and reinforcing compliance with crucial EU safety regulations.
