Overview
EN IEC 60079-31:2024 - Explosive atmospheres - Part 31: Equipment dust ignition protection by enclosure "t" - specifies requirements for design, construction and testing of equipment and components protected by enclosure (Type of Protection “t”) for use in explosive dust atmospheres. This third edition (aligned with IEC 60079-31:2022 + COR1:2023) is a technical revision that supplements and modifies the general requirements of IEC 60079-0; where conflicts exist, EN IEC 60079-31 takes precedence. The standard excludes dusts of explosives not requiring atmospheric oxygen, pyrophoric substances and equipment intended for underground mine parts or mine areas endangered by firedamp.
Key topics and requirements
- Levels of protection (ta, tb, tc) - defines relationships between level of protection, equipment groups and ingress protection (IP).
- Dust exclusion by enclosure - construction and jointing requirements (threads, gaskets, cemented joints, windows) to prevent ingress of combustible dust.
- Fault current and short-circuit requirements (Major change C1) - equipment with Level "ta" shall be rated for connection to circuits with prospective short-circuit current ≤ 1.5 kA; mains-connected "tb"/"tc" equipment intended to interrupt fault currents above 10 kA must have a rated maximum short‑circuit withstand current, be type‑tested and marked accordingly.
- Cells and batteries (Major change C2) - sealed cells/batteries required in specified Ex Equipment containing sparking contacts or hot surfaces (rules differ by level of protection).
- Temperature classification and malfunction conditions (Major change C3) - includes overload/malfunction conditions for tb converter‑fed rotating machines when determining maximum surface temperature.
- Entry devices and cable transit requirements (Major change C4 / Annex A) - additional construction, testing and marking rules for cable glands, cable transit devices, conduit seals and blanking elements used with Type "t".
- Verification, type and routine tests; marking - clauses cover testing for dust exclusion and other verification, with thermal test provisions referenced to IEC 60079-0.

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as "IEC Publication(s)"). Their
preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence between
any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in the latter.
5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
services carried out by independent certification bodies.
6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual experts and

EXPLOSIVE ATMOSPHERES –
Part 31: Equipment dust ignition protection by enclosure "t"
1 Scope
This part of IEC 60079 is applicable to equipment protected by enclosure and surface
temperature limitation for use in explosive dust atmospheres. It specifies requirements for
design, construction and testing of Ex Equipment and Ex Components.
This document supplements and modifies the general requirements of IEC 60079-0. Where a
requirement of this document conflicts with a requirement of IEC 60079-0, the requirement of
this document takes precedence.
This document does not apply to dusts of explosives, which do not require atmospheric oxygen
for combustion, or to pyrophoric substances.
This document does not apply to Ex Equipment or Ex Components intended for use in
underground parts of mines as well as those parts of surface installations of such mines
endangered by firedamp and/or combustible dust.
This document does not take account of any hazard due to an emission of flammable or toxic
gas from the dust.
This document does not contain requirements for Ex Equipment used in areas where both
combustible dust and explosive gas atmospheres can occur, whether simultaneously or
separately. Requirements for explosive gas atmospheres can be found in other parts of the
IEC 60079 series. Guidance on Ex Equipment to be used where combustible dust and explosive
gas atmospheres occur simultaneously ("hybrid mixtures") can be found in IEC 60079-14.
Where the Ex Equipment has to meet other environmental conditions, for example, protection
against ingress of water and resistance to corrosion, additional measures which do not
adversely affect the integrity of the enclosure can be necessary.
