Overview
EN IEC 62841-2-12:2024/A11:2024 (CENELEC amendment A11) defines particular safety requirements for hand-held concrete vibrators. This amendment modifies EN IEC 62841-2-12:2024 and supplements Part 1 (EN 62841-1:2015 and its A11 amendment) to address hazards, testing and marking specific to concrete vibrators. The amendment was approved by CENELEC on 2024-08-05 and sets national implementation (dop) by 2025-08-05 with withdrawal of conflicting standards (dow) by 2028-08-05.
Key keywords: hand-held concrete vibrators, safety, noise, vibration, battery isolation, EN IEC 62841-2-12, CENELEC, amendment A11.
Key Topics
Scope and noise exemption: Parts immersed in concrete during normal use are considered not to generate hazardous noise and therefore may be exempt from certain noise tests. Transportable vibrators with external motors remain outside this scope.
Test conditions: Modifications clarify test mounting and load conditions. For normal-load noise tests, the vibrator bottle is immersed centrally in a container with water equivalent to at least 50 times the bottle volume and must not contact container walls or bottom.
Noise measurement: A specific marking addition requires that concrete vibrators of design a) indicate that the A-weighted emission sound pressure level L does not exceed 70 dB(A).
Operating and installation rules: Design b) concrete vibrators are tested without the vibrator bottle (motor suspended) and are tested at no-load for certain noise measurements. Temperature requirements from EN 62841-1:2015, 5.6 are not applicable for these tests.
Battery safety (Annexes K & L): Normative text requires integral-battery tools to have either an isolation device (disconnecting at least one battery pole with clear indication and protection against accidental reconnection) or a disabling device (e.g., lock-off mechanisms requiring two dissimilar actions). Compliance is verified by inspection and manual test.
Added normative/informative annexes: Annex ZA maps international references to European publications; Annex ZZ describes conformity with Directive 2006/42/EC (machinery directive) and the essential requirements covered by this standard.
Applications
This amendment is practical for:
- Manufacturers of hand-held concrete vibrators updating design and instructions to meet European requirements.
- Test laboratories adapting noise and vibration test set-ups for immersed vs non-immersed components.
- Compliance and product safety engineers demonstrating conformity with the Machinery Directive and related CENELEC requirements.
- Procurement and safety managers specifying equipment with required noise limits and battery isolation features.
Related Standards
- EN 62841-1:2015 (General requirements) and EN 62841-1:2015/A11:2022 - Part 1 remains applicable where not modified.
- IEC 62841-1 (international publication referenced in Annex ZA).
- Directive 2006/42/EC - Annex ZZ maps the standard to essential requirements of the Machinery Directive.

The Part 2-12 supplements or modifies the corresponding clauses in EN 62841-1:2015 and
EN 62841-1:2015/A11:2022, so as to convert it into the European Standard: Particular requirements for hand-
held concrete vibrators.
Where a particular subclause of Part 1 is not mentioned in the Part 2-12, that subclause applies. When this
document states “addition”, “modification” or “replacement”, the relevant text in Part 1 is to be adapted
accordingly.
The following print types are used:

This document follows the overall requirements of EN ISO 12100.
This document has been prepared under a standardization request addressed to CENELEC by the European
Commission. The Standing Committee of the EFTA States subsequently approves these requests for its
Member States.
For the relationship with EU Legislation, see informative Annex ZZ, which is an integral part of this document.
Compliance with the clauses of Part 1 together with Part 2-12 provides one means of conforming with the
essential health and safety requirements of the Directive concerned.

listing of these bodies can be found on the CENELEC website.
1 Modification to Clause 1, “Scope”
Add the following to the Scope:
“Concrete vibrators or parts of them immersed in concrete during normal use are considered not to cause any
hazard due to noise.
NOTE Transportable concrete vibrators or concrete vibrators where the vibrator bottle is driven by a transportable
motor either standing on ground or carried on the back of the operator are not covered by this document.”
2 Modification to Clause 5, “General conditions for the tests”
Replace the existing 5.101 with the following:
"5.101 For tests conducted at normal load, during operation, the vibrator bottle is immersed centrally in a
container filled with an amount of water corresponding to at least 50 times the volume of the vibrator bottle. The
height of the container is such that no water can splash out during the test. During the tests, the vibrator bottle
is held or suspended such that the vibrator bottle does not make contact with the wall or bottom of the conta
