Overview
EN 60745-2-15:2006/AA (prEN 60745-2-15/prAA) is the CENELEC draft amendment that sets safety and testing requirements for hand-held motor-operated hedge trimmers. It is Part 2-15 of the EN 60745 series and is intended to be used together with EN 60745-1:2003 (general requirements for hand-held electric motor-operated tools). This document aligns the hedge trimmer requirements with the Machinery Directive and supersedes EN 50144-2-15:2001 when ratified. Note: the version shown is a draft amendment (prAA) distributed for review and may be updated.
Key Topics and Requirements
- Scope: Particular safety requirements for hedge trimmers that supplement the general clauses of EN 60745‑1.
- Sound and noise measurement:
- A-weighted sound power level (LWA) must be reported in dB (reference 1 pW).
- Measurement methods reference EN ISO 3744 and ISO 11094 (1991); six microphone positions on a hemispherical surface are specified (ISO 11094 measurement surface).
- Measurement surface: hemispherical radius r = 4 m for hedge trimmers with cutting length up to 1.2 m.
- Measurements shall be taken outdoors or indoors in an acoustic free field; outdoor test area must be flat and free of reflecting objects within a defined radius.
- Measurements are made in the direction of blade movement only; tests are performed at no‑load with the cutting device held horizontal (as in normal use).
- Environmental correction factor K is considered negligible under specified conditions.
- Construction and testing adjustments:
- Part 2-15 modifies or replaces specific subclauses of Part 1 (subclauses added begin at 101; additions prefixed “Z” where needed).
- Clause 21 of Part 1 is noted as not applicable in one instance (21.Z1).
- Standardization and compliance:
- Prepared by CENELEC TC 61F to support essential health and safety requirements of EU directives.
Applications and Who Uses It
- Manufacturers of electric hedge trimmers: design, safety verification, noise data reporting, and CE marking support.
- Test laboratories and acoustic labs: perform standardized sound power and field measurements per EN ISO 3744 / ISO 11094.
- Product safety engineers and compliance officers: ensure conformity with the Machinery Directive and harmonized standards.
- Regulators and certification bodies: assess compliance, approve technical documentation and declarations.
Related Standards
- EN 60745-1:2003 (general requirements)
- EN 50144-2-15:2001 (to be superseded)
- ISO 11094 (1991) – acoustic test code for garden machinery
- EN ISO 3744 – sound power measurement
- EN 292-1 / EN 292-2 (overall safety principles)
- EN 774 (non-electric hedge trimmers)
This standard is essential for ensuring the safety, acoustic performance, and regulatory compliance of motor-operated hedge trimmers.

Foreword
This draft amendment to the draft European Standard prEN 60745-2-15 was prepared by the
Technical Committee CENELEC TC 61F, Safety of hand-held and transportable motor-operated electric
tools. It contains common modifications to IEC 61F/566/CDV (future 60745-2-15), which are proposed
to bring the European Standard in line with the essential health and safety requirements of the
Machinery Directive.
This draft European Standard will supersede EN 50144-2-15:2001.
Other standards referred to in this European standard are listed in Clause 2. Clause 2 lists the valid
edition of those documents at the time of issue of this EN.
This standard is divided into two parts:
Part 1: General requirements which are common to most hand-held electric motor operated tools (for
the purpose of this standard referred to simply as tools) which could come within the scope of
this standard;
Part 2: Requirements for particular types of tools which either supplement or modify the requirements
given in Part 1 to account for the particular hazards and characteristics of these specific tools.
This European Standard has been prepared under a mandate given to CEN and CENELEC by the
European Commission and the European Free Trade Association and supports the essential health
and safety requirements of the Machinery Directive.
Compliance with the clauses of Part 1 together with this Part 2 provides one means of conforming with
the essential health and safety requirements of the Directive concerned.
CEN/TC 144 is producing standards for non-electric hedge trimmers (EN 774).
Warning: Other requirements and other EC Directives can be applicable to the products falling
within the scope of this standard.
This standard follows the overall requirements of EN 292-1 and EN 292-2.
This Part 2-15 is to be used in conjunction with EN 60745-1:2003. When this standard states
