Overview

EN 61076-3-103:2004 (IEC 61076-3-103:2003) is a European/IEC detail specification for a family of rectangular, shielded, single-row connectors with non-removable ribbon cable contacts on a 1.25 mm pitch intended for high speed serial data (HSSDC) wire-to-board applications. The standard defines dimensional, electrical and mechanical requirements, inspection and testing requirements, and ordering/marking conventions. It is intended to be used together with the sectional specification EN 61076-3.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Connector family characteristics
    • Shielded rectangular mating interface
    • Single row, 1.25 mm pitch contact spacing
    • 8 positions (specified family size)
    • Non-removable ribbon cable contacts for wire-to-board use
  • Dimensional and mechanical details
    • Complete dimensional drawings and mounting options (right-angle, straddle, bulkhead, PCI bracket)
    • PCB land patterns, panel cutouts and mounting bracket provisions
  • Electrical and signal integrity
    • Requirements supporting high speed serial data (HSSDC): reference to characteristic impedance and eye-pattern analysis (see normative Annexes on eye pattern and impedance)
    • Contact resistance measurement points and electrical ratings
  • Environmental and reliability
    • Climatic categories and mechanical durability requirements (mating cycles, vibration and shock)
    • Test schedule and test sequences covering electrical, mechanical and environmental performance
  • Quality and conformity
    • Qualification approval testing and reinspection clauses
    • Normative references to IEC/EN test methods (for example IEC 60512 series) and related product specifications

Applications and who uses this standard

  • Electronics designers and PCB engineers specifying compact, shielded connectors for high-speed serial links
  • Connector and cable-assembly manufacturers building ribbon-cable-to-board assemblies
  • Test laboratories and quality engineers performing qualification and conformity testing
  • Procurement and compliance teams requiring uniform specifications for interchangeability and supplier evaluation
  • System integrators in datacom, telecom and instrumentation where compact, shielded high-speed wire-to-board interconnects are required

Practical value

  • Ensures mechanical compatibility and interchangeability across suppliers for 1.25 mm pitch HSSDC ribbon-cable connectors
  • Provides test methods and acceptance criteria to validate signal integrity and environmental robustness
  • Reduces design risk by standardizing mounting, mating and PCB footprint details

Related standards

  • EN/IEC 61076-3 (rectangular connector sectional specification)
  • IEC 60512 series (connectors - tests and measurements)
  • IEC 61076-1 (generic connector requirements)
  • EN ISO 1302 (surface texture notation)

1.7 Ordering information
For ordering connectors according to this detail specification, the type designation described in
1.6 shall be used.
2 Technical information
2.1 Terminology
2.1.1 Free connector (Plug connector)
A connector for attachment to the free end of the wire or cable. (Used to describe the gender of
the mating side of the connector that penetrates its mate upon mating. This gender is
frequently, but not always, associated with the common terminology “free”. Other terms
commonly used are “male” and “pin connector.)
2.1.2 Fixed connector (Receptacle connector)
A connector for attachment to a rigid surface. (Used to describe the gender of the mating side
of the connector that accepts its mate upon mating. This gender is frequently, but not always,
associated with the common terminology “fixed”. Other terms commonly used are “female” and
“socket” connector.)
2.1.3 Ribbon cable
A copper conductor cable in which the copper conductors are aligned in a flat ribbon.

3.4 Mating Information
The process of mating an HSSDC connector pair should be accomplished in a “free fit” manner
where no excessive mechanical stresses are placed on the connectors during or after the
mating process. The mating process should be considered in the context of the packaging
surrounding the device, and cable harnessing and management after connection is made.
Stresses considered include those transmitted to the mated connector interface: for example,
cable weight, cable harnessing, and interference with enclosure parts.
The positional requirements in Figure 25 are those existing in the fully mated condition.
3.4.1 Mating direction
Reliable electrical contact is ensured when the free and fixed locking latches are fully engaged
as indicated in Figure 25.
