Household and similar electrical appliances - Safety - Part 2-53: Particular requirements for sauna heating appliances and infrared cabins

IEC 60335-2-53:2011 deals with the safety of electric sauna heating appliances and infrared emitting units having a rated power input not exceeding 20 kW, their rated voltage being not more than 250 V for single-phase appliances and 480 V for other appliances. The appliances covered by this standard are intended for use in the home and in public saunas located in blocks of flats, hotels and similar locations. This standard also deals with the safety of electric sauna heating appliances provided with a humidifier unit, their rated voltage being not more than 250 V for single-phase appliances and 480 V for other appliances. The room air is humidified by evaporating or atomising water. This fourth edition cancels and replaces the third edition published in 2002 and its Amendment 1 (2007). It constitutes a technical revision. The principal changes in this edition as compared with the third edition of IEC 60335-2-53 are as follows: - the scope is changed to cover infrared cabins; - additional requirements for recessed sauna heaters are added; - requirements of electronic interlocks are added (22.108). The attention of National Committees is drawn to the fact that equipment organizations may need a transitional period following publication of a new, amended or revised IEC publication in which to make products in accordance with the new requirements and to equip themselves for conducting new or revised tests. It is the recommendation of the committee that the content of this publication be adopted for implementation nationally not earlier than 12 months or later than 36 months from the date of publication. This publication is to be read in conjunction with  IEC 60335-1:2010.

Overview

EN 60335-2-53:2011/A11:2023 (CLC) specifies safety requirements for electric sauna heating appliances and infrared cabins intended for household and similar use. It covers appliances with a rated power input up to 20 kW and rated voltages not exceeding 250 V (single-phase) or 480 V (other appliances). The amendment A11 (2023) extends the scope to include infrared cabins, adds requirements for recessed sauna heaters, and introduces rules for electronic interlocks. The standard is used together with EN/IEC 60335-1 (general safety requirements).

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope and applicability: household and public saunas (blocks of flats, hotels, similar locations). Includes sauna heaters with humidifier units that evaporate or atomise water.
  • Construction and safety features:
    • Additional requirements for recessed sauna heaters and infrared emitters.
    • New requirements for electronic interlocks (see clause added in A11).
    • Protection against access to live parts and notes on residual current devices (RCD), referencing wiring rules that recommend RCDs with rated residual operating current not exceeding 30 mA.
  • Marking and instructions:
    • Guidance for use by persons with reduced capabilities; age-related restrictions (children under 8 not to use; 8+ only supervised).
    • Installation instructions must reference HD 60364‑7‑701 and HD 60364‑7‑703 wiring rules.
    • Minimum distances for infrared emitters and other emitter-specific marking requirements.
  • Prefabricated saunas:
    • Mandatory luminaire if no transparent door/window (standby/escape lighting considerations).
    • Specific rules for saunas with showers (EN 60335‑2‑105 apply) and illuminance requirements for cabins located in multi-occupancy buildings.
  • Testing and national implementation: transitional adoption recommended between 12 and 36 months after publication; read in conjunction with Part 1.

Applications and who uses this standard

  • Manufacturers and designers of sauna heaters, infrared cabins, and integrated humidifier units.
  • Test laboratories and conformity assessment bodies performing safety testing, type testing and certification.
  • Electrical installers, specifiers, architects and hotel operators ensuring compliance with wiring rules and safety markings.
  • Regulatory and certification authorities harmonising national standards with CENELEC/IEC requirements.

Related standards

  • EN IEC 60335-1 (general safety requirements for household appliances)
  • HD 60364-7-701 and HD 60364-7-703 (electrical wiring rules for baths/showers and sauna rooms)
  • EN 60335-2-105 (appliances with shower functions)
