Overview

EN 60335-2-85:2003/A1:2008 is the CENELEC adoption of IEC 60335-2-85:2002/A1:2008 and defines the safety requirements for household and similar fabric steamers. Amendment A1 (approved 2008-05-01) modifies the 2003 Part 2-85 standard and supplements the general (Part 1) requirements of the IEC 60335 series. Key implementation dates in the amendment are: latest publication at national level by 2009-02-01 and withdrawal of conflicting national standards by 2013-05-01.

Key topics and technical requirements

This part-2 standard provides particular safety requirements that supplement the general rules in Part 1 of IEC 60335. Important technical themes in the amendment include:

  • Scope and user considerations - clarifies inclusion of persons (including children) with reduced capabilities or lack of experience, and children playing with the appliance.
  • Abnormal and electromagnetic effects - explicitly requires consideration of abnormal situations and how electromagnetic phenomena may affect safe operation.
  • Product-family precedence - confirms Part 2 takes precedence over horizontal/generic standards for hazards covered by the IEC 60335 series.
  • Reference to hot-surface ergonomics - ISO 13732-1 (EN ISO 13732-1:2006) is added in the bibliography for assessing human responses to hot surfaces.
  • Supplementary requirements - the amendment modifies or supplements particular clauses in EN 60335-2-85:2003 (construction, marking, instructions, and tests where applicable) while defaulting to Part 1 when no additional particular requirements are specified.

Note: This summary does not reproduce specific numeric test values or clause text; users should consult the full published standard for detailed technical requirements and test methods.

Applications and who uses it

This standard is used by:

  • Manufacturers and designers of fabric steamers to ensure product safety and regulatory compliance.
  • Test laboratories and conformity assessment bodies performing type and safety testing against the IEC/CENELEC requirements.
  • Regulatory authorities and market surveillance for assessing conformity of household steam appliances.
  • Product safety engineers and certification consultants advising on design changes, markings, user instructions, and risk mitigation.

Keywords: EN 60335-2-85, fabric steamers safety, household appliance safety standard, IEC 60335-2-85 A1 2008, CENELEC compliance, hot surface ergonomics.

Related standards

  • IEC 60335-1 (Part 1 - General requirements) - applies where Part 2 contains no additional requirements.
  • ISO 13732-1 / EN ISO 13732-1:2006 - ergonomics of the thermal environment (hot surface assessment), referenced in the amendment bibliography.
