Overview
The EN IEC 60335-2-4:2025/A11:2025 standard, published by the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CLC), specifies safety requirements for household and similar electrical appliances, particularly focusing on spin extractors. This amendment A11 supplements the 2025 edition of Part 2-4 of the EN IEC 60335-2-4 series. It addresses the safety of stand-alone electric spin extractors as well as spin extractors integrated into washing machines with separate washing and spin extraction containers.
Designed for machines with a dry cloth capacity not exceeding 10 kg and a drum peripheral speed up to 50 m/s, this standard covers appliances operating at rated voltages up to 250 V for single-phase devices and up to 480 V for other configurations. The key objective is to mitigate reasonably foreseeable hazards encountered by all users during operation, including those related to mechanical, electrical, and endurance aspects.
Key Topics
Scope and Applicability
The amendment updates definitions on user exposure to hazards and excludes spin extractors in launderettes, with special attention to accessibility and safety for people with disabilities.Marking and Instructions
Requirements for clear markings on lids or doors ensure proper user guidance and safety during operation.Protection Against Live Parts
Revised clauses clarify protection measures against accidental access to live electrical components.Mechanical and Moisture Resistance
Detailed testing methods for mechanical strength of lids/doors and moisture resistance under tilted conditions enhance durability and user safety.Endurance of Door Interlocks
Enhanced endurance testing of lid and door interlocks guarantees consistent operability over prolonged use, including electrical cycling and mechanical stress.Safety During Operation
Critical modifications demand that the drum drive motor energizes only when the lid or door is securely closed and locked; opening while the drum spins is prohibited.Mechanical Strength Testing
Specific impact tests using weighted rubber hemispheres ensure the structural integrity of lids and doors, minimizing risk of injury or exposure to moving parts.Component Compliance
Updates align component safety requirements, particularly regarding electrically operated door locks and relevant testing standards.
Applications
Household Spin Extractors
This standard applies to consumer-grade spin extractors used for domestic laundry purposes, ensuring appliances meet rigorous safety criteria.Integrated Spin Extractors in Washing Machines
Spin extractors built into washing machines with separate washing and spinning compartments fall within its scope, enabling comprehensive safety coverage.Product Development and Compliance
Manufacturers can utilize the standard to guide design, testing, and certification of spin extractors that comply with European safety regulations.Consumer Safety Assurance
The standard promotes safer home appliances by reducing risks related to electrical hazards, mechanical failures, and improper operation.Market Access in Europe
Compliance with EN IEC 60335-2-4:2025/A11:2025 is essential for gaining access to European markets, meeting legal and regulatory requirements.
