Overview

This document is the draft amendment EN 50083-2:2012/prA2 (CLC), which revises EN 50083-2:2012 for cable networks distributing television signals, sound signals and interactive services. The amendment tightens electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) performance criteria (notably subclause 4.4) and updates normative references to newer EMC and multimedia standards. It clarifies test conditions, required performance levels and techniques used to assess immunity and emission of active and passive equipment for cable distribution systems.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope: Electromagnetic compatibility requirements for equipment used in cable distribution systems (TV, radio and interactive services).
  • Updated normative references: replaces older references with current standards, e.g. EN 55032 (replaces EN 55013 except in 4.3.1), EN IEC 60728-3, EN 61000-3-2, EN 61000-4-4, EN 61000-4-6, and ETSI EN 300 386 V2.1.1 (2016).
  • Test conditions and operating conditions:
    • Measurements at rated performance and standard room temperature; include all sub‑assemblies that would be used in service.
    • Equipment must be operated to maximize disturbance/radiation during tests; maximum rated output level shall be used and declared by the manufacturer.
    • Temporary service/adjustment conditions are excluded from testing.
  • Measurement methods:
    • For 30 MHz to 1 000 MHz, the absorbing clamp method per EN 55013:2013 + A1:2016 is mandated; TEM cell and triaxial techniques are not acceptable for this scope.
  • Performance criteria (4.4.2):
    • Criterion A: Apparatus must operate as intended during and after the test - no unacceptable degradation when requirements of 4.4.2.2 are met.
    • Criterion B: Apparatus must operate as intended after the test; performance measurement during the test is not required.
    • In-channel wanted-to-unwanted signal ratio (no perceptible interference):
      • 60 dB for AM‑VSB‑TV and FM radio
      • 35 dB for FM‑TV and DVB‑S/QPSK
      • 35 dB for DVB‑T/COFDM
      • 35 dB for DVB‑C/QAM
  • Specific immunity and robustness values:
    • Out‑of‑band and in‑band limits referenced to tables in Clause 5 (compliance for Criterion A).
    • Screening effectiveness guidance: example calculation leads to 85 dB screening effectiveness to reach 60 dB carrier-to-interference for analogue.
    • ESD and fast transient requirements: e.g., enclosure ESD 4 kV (Performance B); AC power fast transient 1 kV (Performance B).

Applications and users

  • Manufacturers of cable network equipment (set‑top boxes, headend modules, amplifiers, passive splitters)
  • EMC test laboratories validating immunity/emission for market access and harmonized compliance
  • Network operators and system integrators specifying equipment robustness for deployed cable networks
  • Regulatory and conformity assessment bodies referencing harmonized standards under Directive 2014/30/EU

Related standards

  • EN 55032 (multimedia emissions), EN IEC 60728-3 (active wideband equipment for cable networks), EN 61000 series (EMC testing methods), ETSI EN 300 386 (telecom network equipment EMC).
These references are explicitly updated in the amendment to ensure alignment with current EMC test methods and limits.
