Gospodinjski in podobni električni aparati - Varnost - 2-40. del: Posebne zahteve za električne toplotne črpalke, klimatske naprave in sušilnike zraka

Ta standard obravnava varnost električnih toplotnih črpalk, vključno s toplotnimi črpalkami za gospodinjsko vročo vodo, klimatskimi napravami in sušilniki zraka z zaprtimi gnanimi kompresorji.

Overview

EN 60335-2-40:2003/A11:2004 is a CENELEC standard - part of the EN 60335 household and similar electrical appliances safety series - that sets particular safety requirements for electrical heat pumps, air‑conditioners and dehumidifiers. Amendment A11 (approved 2004‑03‑01) updates EN 60335‑2‑40:2003 and supersedes earlier versions. The amendment clarifies the interaction with the Pressure Equipment Directive (97/23/EC) and adds informative guidance in Annex ZAA.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope and status
    • Specific safety requirements for electrically powered heat pumps, air‑conditioners and dehumidifiers used in household and similar applications.
    • National implementation deadlines and withdrawal dates for conflicting national standards are specified (dop 2005‑03‑01, dow 2007‑03‑01).
  • Pressure Equipment Directive (97/23/EC) relevance
    • Annex ZAA explains when refrigerant vessels and piping fall within PED requirements.
    • Classification thresholds based on internal volume, pressure, and pressure × volume limits for vessels and numerical designation × pressure for piping are specified as criteria for PED applicability.
    • Manufacturer’s declared maximum pressure and internal volume determine applicability.
  • Refrigerant classification
    • Distinguishes dangerous (Group 1) and non‑dangerous (Group 2) refrigerants.
    • Examples listed in Annex ZAA:
      • Dangerous: R‑32, R‑290 (propane), R‑717 (ammonia), R‑600 / R‑600a (butane / isobutane).
      • Non‑dangerous and blends: R‑134a, R‑22, R‑404A, R‑407C, R‑410A, R‑507A.
  • Reference to related technical standards
    • Pressures may be taken from EN 378 (refrigeration systems) where applicable; Annex ZAA provides guidance on using these values.

Practical applications

  • Ensures safe design, manufacture, testing and installation of household and similar electrical heat pumps, air‑conditioners and dehumidifiers.
  • Guides conformity assessment where refrigerant charge, component size or pressure could trigger PED compliance.
  • Informs risk assessment relating to refrigerant hazards, pressure-containing components and piping limits.

Who uses this standard

  • Manufacturers and product designers of heat pumps, AC units and dehumidifiers
  • Compliance and safety engineers and testing laboratories
  • Regulatory authorities and conformity assessment bodies
  • Procurement and quality managers specifying appliance safety and CE marking requirements

Related standards

  • EN 60335 series (household appliance safety)
  • Pressure Equipment Directive 97/23/EC (PED)
