Textiles - Tests for colour fastness - Part X07: Colour fastness to cross-dyeing: Wool (ISO 105-X07:1994)
Specifies a method for determining the resistance of the colour of textiles to the action of processes used for dyeing wool. Specimens of the textile in contact with adjacent fabrics are treated in different types of wool dye-bath, but without any dyestuff. The specimens are then rinsed and dried. The change in colour of the specimen and the staining of the adjacent fabrics are assessed with the grey scales.

Overview
EN ISO 105-X07:1997 is an international standard developed by CEN that specifies the test method for determining the colour fastness of textiles, particularly wool, to cross-dyeing processes. This standard evaluates how resistant the colour of wool textiles is when subjected to dyeing processes where the fabric is exposed to wool dye-baths without added dyestuff. After treatment, the textile specimens are assessed for colour change and staining on adjacent fabrics using standardized grey scales. This method ensures reliability and uniformity in testing colour fastness in wool textiles during manufacturing and quality control.
Key Topics
- Scope and Purpose: Defines methods to test wool textile colour resistance during dyeing without dyestuff to simulate real-world cross-dyeing exposure.
- Test Specimens: Includes preparation of fabric, yarn, or loose fibre specimens composite with adjacent single-fibre fabrics (e.g., cotton, silk, polyester) for cross-contact assessment.
- Test Procedures: Composite specimens undergo a series of controlled dye-bath treatments at approximately 98 °C with various solutions such as acetic acid, sulphuric acid, with or without potassium dichromate.
- Assessment: Changes in specimen colour and staining on adjacent fabrics are evaluated using ISO grey scales for colour change and staining (ISO 105-A02 and ISO 105-A03).
- Reporting: Test reports must specify the standard version, sample details, cross-dyeing method, and numerical grey scale ratings for colour change and staining.
Applications
- Textile Quality Control: Ensures wool fabrics maintain colour integrity during multi-fibre dyeing processes and helps manufacturers meet customer expectations and regulatory requirements.
- Product Development: Assists textile technologists in developing wool blends and dyed fabrics that are resistant to unwanted colour transfer during production and end-use.
- Compliance Testing: Used by certification labs to confirm wool textiles adhere to industry colour fastness standards, facilitating international trade and product safety.
- Dye Process Optimization: Helps dye houses assess the effects of different dye bath chemistries on wool and adjacent fabrics, optimizing dye recipes to minimize cross-dyeing issues.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide
federation of national Standards bodies (ISO member bodies). The work
of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Esch member body interested in a subject for
which a technical committee has been established has the right to be re-
presented on that committee. International organizations, governmental
and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO
collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission
(1 EC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are
circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an International
Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting
a vote.
International Standard ISO ‘lO5-X07 was prepared by Technical Committee
lSO/TC 38, Textiles, Subcommittee SC 1, Tests for coloured textiles and
coloran ts.
This fourth edition cancels and replaces the third edition
(ISO 105-XO7:1987), of which it constitutes a technical revision.
ISO 105 was previously published in thirteen “Parts ”, each designated by
a letter (e.g. “Part A ”), with publication dates between 1978 and 1985.
Esch part contained a series of “sections ”, each designated by the re-
spective patt letter and by a two-digit serial number (e.g. “Section AO1 “).
These sections are now being republished as separate documents, them-
but retaining their earlier alphanumeric desig-
selves designated “Parts”
nations. A complete list of these Parts is given in ISO 105-AOl .
