Overview

EN 13770:2002 (CEN) - Textiles: Determination of the abrasion resistance of knitted footwear garments - defines laboratory methods to measure how knitted footwear garments (ankle socks, socks, heavy tights) resist wear. The standard applies irrespective of size, composition or knit structure and specifies two distinct test methods whose results are not directly comparable: the Martindale abrasion machine method and the abrasion on leg forms method.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Two test methods
    • Method 1 - Martindale: Circular specimens (38 mm diameter) are stretched over a modified holder (rubber sphere with a 20 mm flat test area) and abraded against a reference abradant following EN ISO 12947‑1 motions (Lissajous). Endpoints are recorded as number of rubs to thinning or hole. Important consumables and settings: woven felt substrate, abradant dimensions (≥140 mm), pressing weight (≈2.5 kg) and abradant replacement (start of test or after 50 000 rubs). Loading piece applies about 12 kPa.
    • Method 2 - Abrasion on leg forms: Whole garments are stretched on volumetric leg forms (sizes based on MONDOPOINT) and abraded by a reciprocating slipper fitted with an abradant shoe. Typical test settings include a 10 mm stroke, periodic inspection intervals (100–500 cycles) and abradant paper such as SiC P1000. Foam backing, elastic retaining collars and soft brush are specified accessories.
  • Sampling & conditioning
    • Minimum specimen counts (e.g., at least two specimens from heel and two from sole for Method 1); Method 2 commonly uses two pairs tested in three areas (total 12 specimens).
    • Tests must be performed after conditioning in the standard atmosphere per EN 20139.
  • Endpoints & reporting
    • Endpoint definitions: hole or thinning; test report must state the method used, sample reference/area, endpoint type, individual rub/cycle counts, statistical expression (mean/range) and any deviations from the standard.
  • Normative annexes
    • Annex A (specimen holders) and Annex D (leg form sizes) are normative; other annexes provide informative guidance (abrasive paper specs, foam characteristics).

Applications and who uses it

  • Manufacturers of socks, ankle socks, tights and knitted footwear use EN 13770 for product development, material selection and durability benchmarking.
  • Testing laboratories and quality control teams perform standardized abrasion testing for conformity, supplier comparison and complaint investigation.
  • Retailers and specifiers may use results for performance claims or grading product durability.
  • R&D teams apply the methods to evaluate yarns, knit constructions, reinforcements and finishing treatments.

Related standards

  • EN 20139 - Standard atmospheres for conditioning and testing
