prEN 2287 is a CEN draft European Standard for plain bushes in corrosion resisting steel with a self-lubricating liner. It specifies the bush dimensions, loads, materials, surface treatment, marking and design guidance for aerospace use. It is intended for bushes assembled by interference fit in fixed and moving aerospace parts over the temperature range from -55 °C to 163 °C.
What does prEN 2287 specify?
prEN 2287 specifies the characteristics of plain bushes with a self-lubricating liner, together with the design recommendation for the shafts and housings that carry them. The document is organized as Clauses 1 to 9, covering scope, normative references, terms and definitions, requirements, designation, marking, technical specification, design recommendation and quality management system, followed by a bibliography.
Figures 1 and 2 and Tables 1 to 3 carry the dimensional, load and identification data that a designer or buyer needs to select and specify a bush correctly.
What are the key requirements of prEN 2287?
prEN 2287 ties the bush definition to geometry, material, surface condition, load data and identification rules. In practice, that means the standard is not just a size list - it also sets the conditions needed for the bush to be used as intended.
- Configuration, dimensions and masses - Clause 4.1 requires the bush configuration to follow Figure 1, and the dimensions and masses to follow Figure 1 and Table 1 after surface treatment. The note under Table 1 says only bushes within the bold lines are standard, and the recommended sizes are marked with an asterisk.
- Surface roughness - Clause 4.2 requires the surface roughness to match Figure 1. This matters because the running surface affects fit, wear and friction.
- Materials - Clause 4.3 specifies the bush steel as S80/AISI431, with allowed material references to EN 3490, EN 3161, 1.4044.6 per WL 1.4044, or an equivalent in accordance with TR 4661. The liner must be a self-lubricating wear-resistant material consistent with EN 2311.
- Surface treatment - Clause 4.4 gives two cases: no code means no surface treatment, and code T means passivated to AMS 2700 using the stated methods and types. This matters for corrosion resistance and for how the bush is identified.
- Designation and technology code - Clause 5 builds the identity block from the diameter code, length code, surface-treatment code and technology code. Table 3 distinguishes technology code A for a bonded fabric liner and B for an injection moulded liner; without a code, both technologies may be used.
- Marking - Clause 6 requires each bush and its package to show the identity block, with the manufacturer’s technology stated in that block. If the bush is too small for full marking, the package carries the information, and EN 2424 applies.
- Design recommendation - Clause 8 says the bushes are intended for interference fit installation, with housing diameter H7 and shaft diameter f6. It also sets a minimum shaft hardness of 50 HRC and points readers to Figure 2 for shaft surface roughness.
- Quality management system - Clause 9 requires an approved production organization for aerospace products and a quality management system such as EN 9100 or an equivalent aerospace-accepted system. This is the production assurance link for suppliers and auditors.
What terms does prEN 2287 define?
prEN 2287 uses several terms and codes that matter for selection, marking and installation.
- Plain bush - A bush used as a bearing element without a flange, specified here for aerospace assemblies.
- Self-lubricating liner - The wear-resistant lining that provides sliding performance without separate lubrication being the focus of the standard.
- Interference fit - The fitting method used to install the bush into the housing so it is held by press fit.
- Identity block - The designation string that combines size, treatment and technology information for marking and ordering.
- Code T - The surface-treatment code for a passivated bush under AMS 2700.
- Technology code A / B - A identifies a bonded fabric liner, and B identifies an injection moulded liner.
Who uses prEN 2287?
prEN 2287 is used by aerospace design engineers, component manufacturers, suppliers and quality teams that specify, make, inspect or buy plain bushes. It is also relevant to procurement and product assurance staff who need the exact bush designation, marking and production-control requirements for aerospace parts.
What changed in prEN 2287 from the previous edition?
prEN 2287 supersedes EN 2287:2022. The foreword states these changes relative to that edition:
- updated normative references
- Clause 3 added for terms and definitions
- Clause 4 updated with surface treatment requirements
- Clause 4.3 updated for materials
- Clause 4.4 added for surface treatment
- EN 2424 added in Clause 6 for marking
- bibliography updated
- editorial revision
Which standards are used with prEN 2287?
| Standard | What it contributes |
|---|---|
| EN 2311 | Technical specification for bushes with self-lubricating liner, including load definitions used in Table 2 |
| EN 2424 | Marking of aerospace products, used for the marking rules in Clause 6 |
| EN 3161 | One acceptable steel condition for the bush material |
| EN 3490 | One acceptable steel condition for the bush material |
| AMS 2700 | Passivation requirements for surface treatment code T |
| WL 1.4044:1981-03 | Another acceptable steel reference for the bush material |
| TR 4661 | Reference for equivalent material and surface-treatment acceptance |
| EN 9100 | Cited in the bibliography as an example aerospace quality management system standard |
What does the prEN 2287 document contain?
prEN 2287 contains a configuration drawing, load and size tables, a designation system and installation guidance. Figure 1 shows the bush configuration and the related dimensional information, Table 1 gives the nominal sizes and masses, and Table 2 gives the permissible radial loads. Table 3 identifies the liner technology codes, and Figure 2 shows the shaft and housing arrangement used for the design recommendation.
