FprEN 6129 is a CEN European standard for a stainless steel blind bolt with protruding head, high strength and pulltype installation for aerospace applications. It specifies the bolt's configuration, dimensions, tolerances, mass, strength data, grip range, material, finish, lubrication, marking and designation so designers, buyers and inspectors can use the same part definition.

What does FprEN 6129 specify?

FprEN 6129 covers the product definition for the aerospace blind bolt and organizes that definition into seven clauses plus a bibliography. Clause 4 carries the technical requirements; Clauses 5 to 7 cover identification, marking and the linked technical specification.

ClauseWhat it covers
1Scope
2Normative references
3Terms and definitions
4Requirements
5Designation
6Marking
7Technical specification

The scope is focused on the stainless steel blind bolt itself for aerospace use, with the document giving the data needed to specify, make and check the part consistently.

What are the key requirements of FprEN 6129?

FprEN 6129's main requirements are in Clause 4, where the standard ties the fastener to figures and tables for geometry, performance and materials. In practice, this is the information a purchaser or inspector uses to confirm that the delivered parts match the approved design.

  • Clause 4.1 links configuration, dimensions, tolerances, static strength, tensile preload and spindle retention to Figure 1, Figure 2, Table 1 and Table 2. This is the core fit-and-performance definition for the fastener.
  • Figure 1 shows the main parts - serrated pin, locking collar, sleeve and the shifting anvil/drive washer option - and notes that the shifting anvil/drive washer is not part of the installed fastener. That matters when deciding what belongs to the delivered assembly and what belongs only to the installation tooling or option.
  • Figure 2 notes that the blind-side head may be installed on a 7° max slope. This is useful when the joint surface is not perfectly perpendicular.
  • Clause 4.2 sets grip range and mass in Table 3 and Table 4. Grip length code selection is how the user matches the fastener to joint stack thickness, while the mass table supports weight control and logistics.
  • Clause 4.3 controls material, finish and lubrication through Table 5 and Table 6. The tables link the material code to the sleeve, serrated pin and locking collar material choices, the finish code for the sleeve, and permitted lubricants such as SAE AS5272, MIL-PRF-46010, SAE AS87132 and DOD-L-85645.
  • Clause 5 gives the designation format, for example BLIND BOLT EN 6129 C 05-02 H. This is the ordering language for procurement and part lists; the code tells the supplier the standard, material, diameter, grip length and sleeve finish.
  • Clause 6 sets marking to EN 2424 style B on the fastener head, with the EN standard number, grip length code and manufacturer identification required. The clause also allows the manufacturer to use a material code or part number instead of the EN number, and allows single-digit marking for grip length codes below 10.
  • Clause 7 points to NASM8975 for the technical specification, except for the strength, preload and spindle retention requirements given in Table 2. This means the document inherits the general blind-fastener specification and then overrides the key mechanical values for this part.

What changed in FprEN 6129 from the previous edition?

FprEN 6129 will supersede EN 6129:2016. The stated changes are:

  • Figure 1 and Figure 2 updated, with dimension Q removed.
  • Dimension Q removed from Table 1.
  • Tables 1, 2 and 3 corrected for single values, with hole limits removed.
  • Tables 5 and 6 updated to match revised normative references and preferred options.

Which standards are used with FprEN 6129?

FprEN 6129 refers to several documents that supply marking, coating, lubrication, material and general fastener rules.

ReferenceWhat it contributes
EN 2424Marking of aerospace products
EN 4473Aluminium pigmented coatings for fasteners
DOD-L-85645Dry film lubricant
MIL-PRF-46010Heat-cured solid film lubricant, corrosion inhibiting
NASM8975General specification for blind, high strength, installation-formed fasteners
SAE AMS2700Passivation of corrosion resistant steels
SAE AMS5687Nickel alloy wire material
SAE AMS5690316 corrosion- and heat-resistant steel wire
SAE AMS5737A286 corrosion- and heat-resistant steel material
SAE AS5272Solid film lubricant procurement specification
SAE AS87132Cetyl alcohol lubricant for fasteners

What does the FprEN 6129 document contain?

FprEN 6129 contains Figures 1 and 2 for configuration and typical installation, and Tables 1 to 6 for dimensions, strength, grip range, mass, material options, finish codes and lubrication. It also includes a designation example in Clause 5 and a head-marking rule in Clause 6. For design, these tables provide the selectable codes and physical limits; for testing and inspection, they give the values and conditions to verify the part; and for procurement, they define the part number format and the linked surface-treatment options.
