Overview

EN ISO 22476-10:2017 - "Geotechnical investigation and testing - Field testing - Part 10: Weight sounding test" specifies the equipment, execution and reporting requirements for the weight sounding test (manual or mechanized). The standard applies to natural soils, made ground and fill, on land or water, and fulfils requirements for geotechnical investigations according to EN 1997‑1 / EN 1997‑2. Typical uses include producing a continuous soil profile, indicating layer sequence, estimating density of cohesionless soils and locating very dense layers that indicate end‑bearing pile lengths.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope & purpose
    • Determines soil resistance to static load and to static load with specified turning of the sounding point.
    • Provides guidelines for continuous profiling and density estimation.
  • Penetrometer point
    • Standard screw-shaped point dimensions (circumscribed circle ≈ 35 mm; length ≈ 200 mm; twisted one turn to the left over 130 mm); manufactured from high‑strength steel. Wear limits are specified.
  • Loading systems
    • Manual test weights: standard set totalling 1 000 N (50 N clamp/handle, two 100 N and three 250 N weights).
    • Mechanized tests may use a dynamometer (measuring range up to a minimum of 1 100 N).
  • Rods and measurements
    • Rod diameter 22 mm, weight ~2.5 ± 0.5 kg/m; extension lengths typically 1.0–2.0 m (first rod may be 0.8 m).
    • Depth measurement accuracy and straightness/tolerance requirements are specified.
  • Test procedure
    • Pre‑test calibration and equipment checks; calibration records retained.
    • Predrilling and casing when required (e.g., dry crust or made ground) - depth and use to be recorded.
    • Manual load steps: 0, 50, 150, 250, 500, 750, 1 000 N; penetration rate should be 20–50 mm/s.
    • If resistance > 1 000 N or penetration at 1 000 N < 20 mm/s, maintain 1 000 N and rotate; count number of half turns required for 200 mm penetration to quantify weight sounding resistance.
  • Reporting
    • Field and test report requirements (equipment condition, predrilling, loads, penetration rates, rotation data and interpreted profile).

Applications and users

  • Who uses it: geotechnical engineers, site investigation teams, foundation designers, piling contractors, environmental consultants.
  • Practical value:
    • Rapid, economical method for continuous soil profiling.
    • Estimation of relative density in cohesionless soils and depth to dense strata for preliminary pile length assessment.
    • Suitable for on‑shore and shallow water investigations and for made ground assessment.

Related standards

  • ISO 14688 (soil identification and classification)
  • ISO 14689-1 (rock description)
  • ISO 22475-1 (sampling and groundwater measurement principles)
  • EN 1997‑1 / EN 1997‑2 (geotechnical design and investigation)

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out
through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical
committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International
organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of
electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are
described in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular the different approval criteria needed for the
different types of ISO documents should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the
editorial rules of the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 (see www.iso.org/directives).
