Overview
EN 13630-12:2025 is a European standard developed by CEN that specifies test methods for determining the burning duration of safety fuses used in civil explosive applications. This updated standard replaces the 2002 edition and focuses exclusively on safety fuses, excluding detonating cords.
The standard provides a detailed framework for conducting accurate and reliable measurements of how long a safety fuse burns over a fixed distance, ensuring consistency, safety, and regulatory compliance in civil explosive operations.
Key Topics
Scope and Application
The document applies to safety fuses used in civil explosives and excludes detonating cords. It’s critical for manufacturers and testers in the explosives industry to apply these methods to guarantee safe fuse performance.Test Methods
The standard outlines two primary test procedures for measuring burning duration:- Without confinement: The fuse is laid horizontally on a supporting device and ignited at one end with timing measured until the flame reaches the other end.
- Under confinement: The fuse is placed inside a tube filled with quartz sand to simulate confined conditions, then ignited and timed similarly.
Test Sample Preparation
Safety fuse samples, each 1 meter in length, must be conditioned for at least eight days at a controlled temperature (20 ± 2 °C) and humidity (65 ± 10 %) before testing to ensure standardized conditions.Apparatus Requirements
Important test equipment includes:- Conditioning chamber for environmental control
- A horizontal supporting device (e.g., V-shaped steel gutter)
- Tubes with wooden plugs and cardboard discs for confinement tests
- Timing devices with 0.1-second readability
- Quartz sand with defined grain size
- Instruments to measure ambient temperature, humidity, and atmospheric pressure
Result Expression and Reporting
Burning duration is recorded in seconds for each test piece. Failure to burn completely is reported as “fail.” The test report must include environmental conditions, test piece identification, ignition means, and individual test outcomes.
Applications
Safety and Quality Control in Explosives Manufacturing
Manufacturers of safety fuses can use these standardized test methods to verify product consistency, burn rates, and compliance with regulatory requirements before market release.Regulatory Compliance and Certification
Compliance with EN 13630-12:2025 supports manufacturers and testing laboratories in meeting the essential safety requirements under Directive 2014/28/EU for civil-use explosives, facilitating market access in Europe.Operational Planning for Civil Explosive Use
Accurate knowledge of fuse burning duration ensures precise timing in controlled demolitions, mining operations, and construction blasting, minimizing risk and optimizing efficiency.Research and Development
The standard provides a reliable baseline for assessing new fuse materials, designs, or manufacturing processes, enabling innovation while maintaining safety standards.

Practical Value
Implementing EN 13630-12:2025 delivers enhanced safety assurance and quality control in the civil explosives sector. By standardizing fuse burning duration measurement, stakeholders gain accurate, reproducible data critical for planning explosive operations and meeting legal safety standards. This contributes to safer handling, controlled ignition, and predictable blast timing, supporting industrial efficiency and regulatory adherence across Europe and beyond.
