Textiles - Tests for colour fastness - Part N04: Colour fastness to bleaching - Sodium chlorite (severe) (ISO 105-N04:1993)

Specifies a method for determining the resistance of the colour of natural cellulose textiles to the action of severe bleaching with sodium chlorite as ordinarily employed in textile processing. A specimen in contact with one or two specified adjacent fabrics is treated in a sodium chlorite solution, rinsed and dried. The change in colour of the specimen and the staining of the adjacent fabric(s) are assessed with the grey scale.

Overview

EN ISO 105-N04:1995 is an international standard established by CEN for evaluating the colour fastness of natural cellulose textiles to severe bleaching using sodium chlorite. This test method is essential for the textile industry to ensure that fabrics retain their colour quality and resist damage during textile processing involving bleaching agents. It provides a reliable procedure to assess both colour change on tested specimens and staining on adjacent fabrics using standardized grey scales.

Key Topics

  • Test Scope: This standard specifies a procedure to determine the resistance of natural cellulose textiles to severe bleaching with sodium chlorite, commonly used in textile processing.
  • Test Method: The textile specimen is placed in contact with one or two specified adjacent fabrics and treated in a sodium chlorite bleaching solution at controlled temperature and pH. The specimen is then rinsed and dried before assessment.
  • Assessment Criteria: Colour changes on the specimen and staining of the adjacent fabrics are evaluated via ISO grey scales for colour change and staining, ensuring objective and comparable results.
  • Test Conditions: The sodium chlorite solution is carefully prepared to 2.5 g/l concentration with pH adjusted to 3.5 using formic acid. The test is conducted at 80 °C for one hour without agitation to simulate severe bleaching conditions.
  • Specimen Preparation: Fabric specimens measuring 40 mm x 100 mm are sewn to the multi-fibre or single-fibre adjacent fabrics as per specified configurations to study colour migration and durability.
  • Reporting: Detailed recording of test results includes numerical ratings for colour change and staining along with the identification of sample types and test conditions.

Applications

  • Textile Quality Control: Manufacturers use EN ISO 105-N04 to verify the colour fastness performance of cellulose-based textiles, ensuring resistance to bleaching and safeguarding product quality.
  • Product Development: Textile chemists apply this standard during formulation of dyeing and bleaching processes to optimize colour durability under harsh chemical treatments.
  • Consumer Safety and Expectations: Assures consumers that textiles will maintain colour integrity and avoid unwanted staining when subjected to bleaching in cleaning or manufacturing environments.
  • Compliance Verification: Helps businesses meet regulatory and market standards related to textile colour fastness and durability.

Frequently Asked Questions

EN ISO 105-N04:1995 is a standard published by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN). Its full title is "Textiles - Tests for colour fastness - Part N04: Colour fastness to bleaching - Sodium chlorite (severe) (ISO 105-N04:1993)". This standard covers: Specifies a method for determining the resistance of the colour of natural cellulose textiles to the action of severe bleaching with sodium chlorite as ordinarily employed in textile processing. A specimen in contact with one or two specified adjacent fabrics is treated in a sodium chlorite solution, rinsed and dried. The change in colour of the specimen and the staining of the adjacent fabric(s) are assessed with the grey scale.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide
federation of national Standards bodies (ISO member bodies). The work
of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Esch member body interested in a subject for
which a technical committee has been established has the right to be
represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental
and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO
collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission
(IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are
circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an International
Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting
a vote.
International Standard ISO 105-NO4 was prepared by Technical Committee
ISO/TC 38, Textiles, Sub-Committee SC 1, Tests for coloured textiles and
coloran ts.
This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition (included in
ISO 105-N:1978), of which it constitutes a minor revision.
ISO 105 was previously published in thirteen “Parts”, each designated by
a letter (e.g. “Part A”), with publication dates between 1978 and 1985.
Esch part contained a series of “sections”, each designated by the re-
spective part letter and by a two-digit serial number (e.g. “Section AO1 “).
These sections are now being republished as separate documents, them-
selves designated “Parts” but retaining their earlier alphanumeric desig-
nations. A complete list of these Parts is given in ISO 105-AOI.
