Overview
EN 15960:2011 is a European Standard developed by CEN that specifies a standardized method for the extraction of total calcium, total magnesium, total sodium, and total sulfur in the forms of sulfates from fertilizers. This method enables the preparation of a single extract suitable for the simultaneous determination of these key nutrients. It applies to fertilizers covered by Regulation (EC) 2003/2003, Annex I, which mandates the declaration of these nutrient contents.
By providing a uniform extraction procedure, EN 15960:2011 ensures consistency, accuracy, and comparability of nutrient analyses across laboratories and manufacturers. The standard replaces the previous technical specification CEN/TS 15960:2009 and reflects the latest consensus in fertilizer testing within Europe.
Key Topics
Scope and Application
The standard targets fertilizers requiring declared contents of total calcium, magnesium, sodium, and sulfate-form sulfur in compliance with relevant European regulations.Extraction Method
The procedure involves boiling the fertilizer sample in diluted hydrochloric acid, which effectively extracts the total calcium, magnesium, sodium, and sulfate sulfur. This extract can be used in subsequent chemical or instrumental analyses.Sampling and Sample Preparation
While EN 15960:2011 does not cover sampling itself, it references EN 1482-1 and EN 1482-2 for recommended sampling and homogenization practices to ensure sample representativeness and reliability.Reagents and Apparatus
Key reagents include distilled or demineralized water and dilute hydrochloric acid (1:1 by volume). Standard laboratory equipment such as electric hot plates, beakers, graduated flasks, and filters are specified for the extraction process.Test Procedure
A precise mass of the fertilizer sample is boiled with a defined volume of dilute hydrochloric acid and water for 30 minutes, followed by cooling, volume adjustment, and filtration. Modifications to sample size are provided for fertilizers with high calcium or sulfur content.Reporting Requirements
The standard mandates detailed reporting of sample identification, method reference, test results, sampling and analysis dates, repeatability limits, and any procedural deviations. Proper documentation aids in traceability and regulatory compliance.
Applications
EN 15960:2011 serves as a critical reference for testing laboratories, fertilizer manufacturers, and regulatory authorities involved in quality control and conformity assessment of fertilizers. Practical uses include:
Nutrient Content Verification
Ensuring that fertilizer products meet declared levels of calcium, magnesium, sodium, and sulfate sulfur as per legal requirements and product specifications.Quality Control
Routine analysis during production to monitor consistent nutrient extraction efficiency and product formulation.Regulatory Compliance
Assisting manufacturers in fulfilling obligations under EU fertilizer regulations by providing validated methods for nutrient extraction and analysis.Research and Development
Facilitating fertilizer formulation improvement by accurate measurement of extractable nutrient components.
