Paints and varnishes - Determination of the effect of heat (ISO 3248:2016)
ISO 3248:2016 specifies a method for determining the resistance of single coatings or multi-coat systems of paints, varnishes or related products to changes in gloss and/or colour, blistering, cracking and/or detachment from the substrate under conditions of a specified temperature.
This procedure is applicable to products intended for use on domestic radiators or other articles likely to be subjected to similar temperatures.
Barve in laki - Ugotavljanje vpliva toplote (ISO 3248:2016)

Overview
EN ISO 3248:2016 is an internationally recognized standard developed by CEN and ISO that specifies a reliable method for assessing the effect of heat on paints, varnishes, and related coating products. This standard outlines the procedure for determining the resistance of single or multi-coat paint systems to heat-induced changes such as alterations in gloss, color, blistering, cracking, and detachment from the substrate. It applies primarily to coatings used on domestic radiators or similar items exposed to elevated temperatures.
Designed to ensure product durability and quality under thermal stress, EN ISO 3248:2016 plays a crucial role in quality control, product development, and compliance testing within the coatings industry.
Key Topics
- Test Methodology: Panels coated with the paint or varnish are exposed to controlled oven temperatures (typically 125 ± 2 °C for 24 hours). After heating, panels are cooled to ambient temperature and inspected for visual deterioration compared to unheated samples.
- Evaluation Parameters:
- Changes in gloss and color
- Blistering and cracking
- Detachment from the substrate
- Sample Preparation: Test panels are prepared on substrates such as steel, tinplate, aluminium, or glass, with defined dimensions (150 mm × 100 mm). Coating application, drying/stoving, and conditioning procedures comply with relevant ISO standards (ISO 1514, ISO 3270, ISO 2808).
- Additional Testing: Post-heat exposure, panels may undergo further mechanical tests like scratch resistance, bending, cupping, and impact resistance, adhering to ISO methods (ISO 1518-1, ISO 1519, ISO 1520, ISO 6272-1).
- Test Conditions: The heat test emphasizes strict control over temperature and humidity to maintain comparability of results. Alternative conditions can be specified by agreement but must be clearly reported.
- Reporting: Comprehensive documentation is required, including product details, preparation methods, test conditions, results, and any deviations or anomalies observed during testing.
Applications
The EN ISO 3248:2016 standard is invaluable for:
- Quality Assurance and Control: Manufacturers can verify the thermal stability and durability of paint and varnish coatings to ensure performance under normal operating temperatures, especially for heating appliances.
- Product Development: Formulators and R&D teams can test new coating formulations for improved heat resistance before market release.
- Regulatory Compliance: Demonstrates conformance with international testing requirements for paints and varnishes exposed to heat, facilitating market acceptance across countries adopting CEN and ISO standards.
- Failure Analysis: Identifies failure modes related to heat exposure, helping to troubleshoot and improve coating systems.
- Contract and Tender Specifications: Provides a standard reference for defining performance criteria in tender documents within industrial and domestic sectors.
Related Standards
EN ISO 3248:2016 complements and references several other international standards essential for comprehensive testing and evaluation of paints and varnishes under heat stress:
- ISO 1513 – Examination and preparation of test samples
- ISO 1514 – Standard panels for testing coatings
- ISO 2808 – Measurement of film thickness of coatings
- ISO 3270 – Conditioning of paints and varnishes for testing
- ISO 1518-1 – Scratch resistance test methods
- ISO 1519 – Bend test for determining coating flexibility
- ISO 1520 – Cupping test for coating deformation resistance
- ISO 6272-1 – Impact resistance testing by falling weight
Together, these standards establish a comprehensive framework for evaluating the performance, durability, and reliability of coating products exposed to heat.
