EN 1429:2013 Overview
EN 1429:2013 is a European Standard developed by CEN that specifies analytical methods for testing bitumen and bituminous binders. It focuses on the determination of residue on sieving of bituminous emulsions and the evaluation of storage stability through sieving techniques. This standard replaces EN 1429:2009, introducing refined procedures to better assess particle size distribution and storage behavior in bituminous emulsions used for road construction and sealing materials.
The standard is applicable to bituminous emulsions and binders, ensuring consistent quality control by measuring the quantity of coarse particles and monitoring how these particles evolve during storage. It supports material reliability and performance in practical applications.
Key Topics
Residue on Sieving
Quantifies coarse particles retained on sieves with mesh sizes of 0.500 mm and 0.160 mm to characterize particle size distribution in bituminous emulsions.Storage Stability Assessment
Measures the variation in residue on a 0.500 mm sieve after the emulsion is stored for a specified period, indicating the emulsion's stability and resistance to particle coalescence or aggregation.Sieving Procedures and Apparatus
Utilizes standardized sieves, rinsing agents, balances (precise to 0.001 g), and controlled drying methods to ensure accurate and reproducible results.Sample Preparation and Dilution
Details protocols for handling viscous emulsions, including dilution with aqueous sodium hydroxide or hydrochloric acid phases to facilitate sieving without altering characteristics.Calculation Methodology
Defines formulas for calculating mass fractions of residues, incorporating corrections for solution weight and emulsion mass changes during testing.Safety and Environmental Considerations
Emphasizes responsible use of solvents and reagents, minimizing environmental impact and ensuring user safety during testing.
Applications
EN 1429:2013 is critical in industries and organizations that manufacture, test, or use bituminous emulsions, including:
Road Construction and Rehabilitation
Ensures quality control of binders used in asphalt and surface treatments by verifying particle size consistency and stability over time to prevent performance issues.Material Manufacturing
Facilitates testing during production to control the emulsification process and detect potential defects or instability.Quality Assurance Laboratories
Provides standardized testing procedures for certification and compliance with contractual and regulatory requirements.Research and Development
Assists in developing new emulsion formulations and improving the storage stability of bituminous products.
Related Standards
EN 1429:2013 references several harmonized standards to support its application:
EN 58 – Sampling methods for bitumen and bituminous binders, ensuring representative samples for testing.
EN 12594 – Preparation of test samples of bituminous binders, promoting consistency before testing.
EN ISO 3696 – Specification and testing of water quality for laboratory use, crucial for reagent preparation and washing procedures.
ISO 565 – Defines specifications for test sieves, including mesh size and construction, ensuring uniformity in sieving processes.
Additionally, EN 1429 complements EN 12847, which addresses settling tendency, highlighting that storage stability and settling are related but distinct phenomena.
By adhering to EN 1429:2013, laboratories and manufacturers can accurately assess the quality, particle size distribution, and storage stability of bituminous emulsions, enhancing binder reliability for critical infrastructure applications. This standard remains an essential reference in the bitumen and road construction sectors for achieving product consistency, safety, and environmental responsibility.

Although both phenomena are often linked, an emulsion may settle without modification of particle size distribution (no coalescence of emulsion droplets). Note 2 to entry: The purpose of the limits fixed by the emulsion specification is to ensure that there cannot be any disturbance of the workability of the bitumen emulsion under practical conditions. 4 Principle A known mass of bituminous emulsion is filtered through either a prepared sieve with a mesh size of 0,500 mm or through two prepared sieves with mesh sizes of 0,500 mm and of 0,160 mm. The amount of binder retained on the sieves is weighed after washing and drying.
Storage stability is determined as the amount of binder retained on the sieve with a mesh size of 0,500 mm after a defined storage period (n days). 5 Reagents and materials Use only reagents of recognised analytical grade and water conforming to grade 3 of EN ISO 3696. SIST EN 1429:2013
