Overview

EN 16796-4:2019 is a European standard developed by CEN that specifies test methods for measuring fuel consumption and energy efficiency of variable-reach rough-terrain industrial trucks. These trucks are widely used in construction, agriculture, and other heavy-duty outdoor applications where terrain conditions are challenging. This part of the EN 16796 series focuses specifically on trucks compliant with ISO 5053-1 classifications, excluding slewing trucks with rotational movement beyond 5° from the longitudinal axis.

The standard complements EN 16796-1, the general test method, taking precedence where specific test conditions and requirements differ. It aims to provide manufacturers, operators, and regulators with a reliable, reproducible methodology to assess fuel consumption, promoting energy savings and emissions reduction in industrial trucks used in rough terrain environments.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Applicability
EN 16796-4 applies to variable-reach rough-terrain trucks used for heavy-material handling. It excludes trucks with significant slewing capability (>5° lateral axis movement).

  • Test Conditions
Tests are conducted under controlled conditions defined in EN 16796-1, including fluid temperatures and disabled auxiliary equipment such as air conditioning. The fuel consumption is measured during operational phases representative of typical use.

  • Measurement Procedure
The fuel consumption measurement consists of four distinct duty phases simulating real-world work cycles:

    • Travelling: Testing on level ground at maximum speed, without load or attachments.
    • Idle mode: Engine running at idle speed, stationary truck with transmission in neutral.
    • Pick and carry mode: Truck transports a specified load between two pallet racks 30 meters apart, simulating typical load handling.
    • Bucket mode: Truck equipped with a bucket loads and transfers material, carrying a load between 35% and 50% of rated capacity, with specific requirements for material density and minimal dust.
  • Fuel Usage Measurement
Fuel consumption can be measured directly from the fuel tank or indirectly via a secondary removable fuel tank if direct measurement is impractical. There is also provision for testing trucks with eco-mode technology to assess fuel savings with this function enabled versus disabled.

  • CO Emission Calculation
CO emissions related to fuel consumption are calculated following the method in EN 16796-1 Annex C, with test durations and cycles defined to ensure accuracy and repeatability.

  • Reporting and Documentation
Test reports must conform to EN 16796-1 documentation requirements, including detailed fuel consumption results for each operational phase and specifications of the bucket capacity and material density used during bucket mode tests.

Applications

EN 16796-4:2019 is essential for manufacturers, testing bodies, and fleet operators investing in energy-efficient and environmentally compliant industrial trucks designed for rugged terrain. Practical applications include:

  • Product Development and Certification
Assisting manufacturers in validating fuel efficiency improvements and eco-mode technologies for rough-terrain variable-reach trucks.

  • Fleet Management
Enabling operators to benchmark fuel consumption during typical work cycles, facilitating better fuel usage predictions, cost savings, and environmental compliance.

  • Regulatory Compliance
Providing a standardized test method accepted throughout Europe to satisfy requirements for energy efficiency and emission reporting.

  • Environmental Impact Assessment
Supporting initiatives to reduce carbon footprints and fuel consumption in heavy-duty industrial vehicle operations across sectors such as construction, forestry, and agriculture.

Related Standards

To fully understand and implement EN 16796-4, familiarity with related standards is essential:

  • EN 16796-1:2016 – General test methods for energy efficiency of industrial trucks.
  • ISO 5053-1 – Terminology and classification of industrial trucks, defining types including variable-reach rough-terrain trucks.
  • EN 1459-1 – Safety requirements and verification for rough-terrain trucks, including variable-reach models.
  • EN 16796 series Parts 2, 3, and 5 – Cover other specific truck types like operator-controlled self-propelled trucks, container handling lift trucks, and trucks with elevating operator positions.

By adhering to EN 16796-4:2019, stakeholders can promote responsible fuel consumption, optimize truck performance in challenging environments, and comply with European directives targeting industrial vehicle sustainability. This standard delivers a structured, repeatable approach to fuel efficiency testing that supports industry-wide energy conservation goals.
