Resilient, laminate and textile floor coverings - Measurement of dynamic coefficient of friction on dry floor surfaces

This European standard specifies the parameters for the measurement of dynamic coefficient of friction (u) on surfaces of resilient, laminate and textile floor coverings, usually walked on with shoes. Reliefed floor coverings with a displacement volume <= 4 cm3/dm2 are included. The measurements are made on dry flooring surfaces only.

Overview

EN 13893:2002 is a European standard developed by CEN that specifies the method for measuring the dynamic coefficient of friction (μ) on dry surfaces of resilient, laminate, and textile floor coverings. This standard applies to floor coverings that are typically walked on with shoes, including relief floor coverings with a displacement volume of up to 4 cm³/dm². The testing method is designed for laboratory conditions and focuses on dry surfaces only, excluding wet or contaminated flooring.

The primary goal of EN 13893:2002 is to standardize the principles and parameters for dynamic friction measurement rather than mandate a specific testing device. This leads to consistent, comparable results regarding floor slipperiness, an important factor in safety and flooring performance.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Application: The standard covers resilient, laminate, and textile floor coverings, including relief floors with limited displacement volume, tested under dry conditions.
  • Dynamic Coefficient of Friction (μ): Defined as the ratio between horizontal frictional force and vertical load during motion at a constant speed.
  • Test Principle: Loaded sliders (two leather and one shoe rubber) are pulled at a constant speed across the floor covering surface. The horizontal force required for motion is measured to calculate μ.
  • Apparatus Specifications: Includes a pulling device capable of maintaining a speed between 0.20 and 0.30 m/s, a force measuring device with 1% accuracy, and a slider assembly loaded to approximately 10 kg.
  • Slider Materials: Leather sliders with specified density and hardness, and a shoe rubber slider made from SBR material with defined Shore hardness.
  • Calibration: Devices must be calibrated using known weights to ensure accuracy within a deviation of 0.01 from theoretical values.
  • Sampling and Conditioning: Test pieces must be taken from production samples, conditioned at defined temperature and humidity levels, and cleaned with dry cloth or brush-no detergents.
  • Test Procedure: Five measurements are taken in both machine and cross-machine directions or in the direction with lowest friction if unknown. The first two results are discarded; the last three are averaged.
  • Results Reporting: Includes detailed product identification, environmental conditions, individual and average μ values, and any deviations from the standard.

Applications

  • Flooring Safety Assessment: Helping manufacturers and specifiers evaluate slip resistance of resilient, laminate, and textile floors in dry conditions.
  • Quality Control: Ensuring consistent friction properties across production batches to meet safety and regulatory requirements.
  • Product Development: Enabling flooring developers to optimize surface textures and materials for adequate slip resistance.
  • Compliance and Certification: Providing evidence for compliance with safety standards and regulations related to floor slipperiness.
  • Research and Testing Laboratories: Standardizing test methods to perform reliable and replicable dynamic friction tests on floor coverings.

Related Standards

  • EN 12466:1998 – Vocabulary for resilient floor coverings, providing terminology used within this test method.
  • EN 522:1998 – Adhesives for leather and footwear materials, specifying requirements relevant to slider construction.
  • EN ISO 868 – Plastics and ebonite hardness determination, used for specifying leather slider hardness.
  • Other CEN/TC 134 Standards – Guidelines covering installation, performance, and additional testing methods for resilient, textile, and laminate floorings.

By adhering to EN 13893:2002, flooring professionals gain a reliable, standardized approach to evaluating slip resistance under dry conditions, helping to improve safety, quality assurance, and product development in the flooring industry.
