Overview

EN 14296:2015+A1:2018 (CEN) is the European standard for sanitary appliances - communal washing troughs. It specifies essential performance characteristics and test methods to verify cleanability, load resistance and durability of communal washing troughs intended for domestic purposes (including factory changing rooms, sports clubs, student accommodation and non‑medical hospital areas). The standard also defines marking, assessment and factory production control requirements.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope and intended use
    • Applies to communal washing troughs designed for use by more than one person simultaneously; excludes applications requiring special medical provisions.
    • Waste outlet hole dimensions are expected to comply with EN 695 unless the waste fitting is supplied with the trough.
  • Cleanability
    • Surfaces in contact with water must be visibly smooth, non‑absorbent and free from acute internal corners so they can be kept free from dirt and stains under normal maintenance.
    • Typical compliant materials: plastics, enamelled steel/cast iron, stainless steel, glazed ceramics, glass and anodized aluminium.
    • Cleanability is assessed by visual inspection under suitable lighting (see test method 5.1).
  • Load resistance
    • Specifies tests for evenly distributed loads, localized rim loads, and bottom loading. Tests are performed after correct installation according to manufacturer instructions.
    • Loads are applied using reinforced cloth bags filled with lead shot, iron shot or sand and remain in position for a minimum period (1 hour) to check for cracking, collapse or permanent deformation that would impair drainage.
  • Durability
    • Materials and construction must ensure long‑term retention of cleanability and load resistance characteristics.
  • Marking & product designation
    • Products can be designated using characteristic codes: CA (Cleanability), LR (Load Resistance), DA (Durability). Intended use can be marked as Personal hygiene (PH).
  • Assessment & AVCP
    • Includes requirements for type testing, factory production control (FPC) and declaration of performance (DoP) per the AVCP system and links to Regulation (EU) No. 305/2011 (Annex ZA).

Applications

  • Use this standard when specifying, manufacturing, testing or procuring communal washing troughs for:
    • Changing rooms, sports facilities and educational accommodation
    • Residential blocks and non‑medical hospital areas
    • Building product procurement, compliance checks and type testing

Who should use this standard

  • Manufacturers developing and marking communal washing troughs
  • Product testing laboratories performing cleanability and load tests
  • Architects, specifiers and consultants writing tender documents or selecting sanitary appliances
  • Facilities managers and installers ensuring correct installation and compliance
