Overview

EN ISO 22744-2:2020 - "Textiles and textile products - Determination of organotin compounds - Part 2: Direct method using liquid chromatography" - is a CEN-endorsed ISO test method for the qualification and quantification of organotin compounds in textiles. The standard specifies a direct analytical procedure based on liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (LC‑MS/MS). It applies to all types of materials from textile products (see CEN/TR 16741 for material applicability).

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Analytical principle: extraction of organotin species from textile material using a methanol/ethanol mixture with tropolone as complexing agent, followed by direct analysis by LC‑MS/MS. No additional derivatization step is required.
  • Target compounds: mono-, di- and tri‑substituted organotin compounds (examples listed in the standard) and associated internal standards.
  • Sample preparation: test pieces prepared from single material components with particles up to 4 mm edge length; up to three specimens of equal mass may be analysed together, subject to detection limits.
  • Reagents and apparatus: analytical‑grade solvents (water, methanol, ethanol), tropolone, ammonium formate/formic acid, standard organotin compounds, LC‑MS/MS instrumentation and suitable consumables (0.45 μm syringe filters, LC vials, C18 reverse‑phase column noted as suitable). ISO 4787 is referenced for volumetric glassware.
  • Calibration and expression of results: the method defines preparation of stock/working standards, internal standards, calibration curves and calculation/reporting of quantitative results. Annexes provide example chromatographic conditions, calibration preparation and method reliability data.
  • Safety: explicit warning about the toxicity and endocrine‑disrupting properties of organotins - appropriate lab safety and environmental controls are required.

Applications and users

This standard is intended for:

  • Textile testing laboratories conducting routine or investigative chemical analyses.
  • Manufacturers and suppliers of textiles, coated fabrics and polymeric textile components for product safety and quality control.
  • Regulatory and compliance bodies assessing chemical content in textile products.
  • Environmental health and safety teams monitoring hazardous organotin residues in supply chains.

Typical applications include screening and quantifying organotin residues in fabrics, coated materials and other textile components to support product safety assessments, supplier audits and compliance verification.

Related standards

  • CEN/TR 16741 - defines which textile materials are applicable for organotin determination.
  • ISO 22744 series - additional parts in this series cover complementary methods and guidance (see ISO for the full list).
  • ISO 4787 - laboratory glassware volumetric methods referenced by this standard.

bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out
through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical
committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International

4 Principle
The organotin compounds are extracted from the material of a textile product with a methanol-
ethanol mixture using tropolone as a complexing agent. The mono- and di-organotin-tropolone
complexes and tri-organotin cations formed in the extraction procedure are directly analysed by a
liquid chromatograph with a tandem mass spectrometer (LC-MS/MS). This method does not require
additional derivatization step.
Table 1 indicates the list of organotin compounds which can be analysed with this document.
This document is also applicable for further organotin compounds provided that the method is validated
