Overview

EN ISO 8130-5:2021 is a European and international standard specifying a method for determining the flow properties of a powder/air mixture, specifically focusing on coating powders. Developed by ISO/TC 35 and CEN/TC 139 committees, this standard provides a reliable procedure to evaluate how coating powders behave when mixed with air during fluidization. The flow properties assessed are critical for the transport, spraying, and application of coating powders in industrial processes.

The results are influenced by multiple factors including powder composition, density, particle size distribution, particle shape, agglomeration tendency, and the propensity of particles to accept an electrical charge. This standard replaces the previous 2010 edition and incorporates updated testing conditions, terminologies, and apparatus specifications to ensure precise and repeatable measurements.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Purpose
The standard defines a method to estimate flow characteristics of a coating powder when fluidized with air, which is essential for quality control and process optimization in powder coating applications.

  • Testing Principle
A known quantity of coating powder is fluidized in a vessel by dry, clean air at controlled temperature, humidity, and atmospheric pressure. Measurements include:

    • Height of the powder bed during fluidization and at rest.
    • Mass of powder flowing through a calibrated orifice over a fixed time interval. These parameters are used to calculate the fluidization factor (ϕ) and powder flow rate (R), quantifying the powder’s transport and spraying behavior.
  • Apparatus Requirements
The method requires specific equipment such as:

    • A fluidization vessel with a porous bottom and a precise orifice for powder discharge.
    • Air regulation unit with a flowmeter to maintain airflow around 200 l/h.
    • Analytical balance for accurate powder mass measurement.
    • Devices for measuring bed height and timing the flow.
  • Test Conditions
Testing is conducted at standardized environmental conditions of (23 ± 2) °C and (50 ± 5)% relative humidity to ensure reproducibility.

  • Sampling and Calibration
Representative sampling is performed according to ISO 15528. The apparatus is calibrated prior to testing to ensure correct air flow rates and measurement accuracy.

  • Calculations and Reporting

    • Fluidization factor (ϕ) = height of fluidized bed / height of powder at rest.
    • Powder flow rate (R) = (mass of powder collected × ϕ) / time interval.
Results are averaged over duplicate or triplicate runs depending on precision criteria.

Applications

  • Quality Control of Coating Powders
Manufacturers use this standard to assess and control the flowability of powder coatings, essential for ensuring consistent application quality and avoiding defects.

  • Process Optimization in Powder Coating
Understanding flow properties helps optimize equipment settings for powder transport, fluidization, and spraying, improving efficiency and reducing waste.

  • Product Development
Research and development teams employ this method to evaluate new powder formulations, focusing on particle size distribution and surface characteristics to enhance flow behavior.

  • Troubleshooting Production Issues
Identification of flow issues such as agglomeration or electrostatic buildup that affect coating uniformity.

Related Standards

  • ISO 8130-14: Vocabulary for Coating Powders
This standard provides terminology related to coating powders, enabling consistent communication of concepts and test methods.

  • ISO 15528: Sampling of Paints and Varnishes
Specifies the proper procedures for sampling raw materials and finished products, ensuring representative and reliable test samples for flow property determination.

  • Other Parts of ISO 8130 Series
The ISO 8130 series covers various test methods and requirements for powder coatings, including particle size analysis, density measurements, and adhesion properties.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out
through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical
committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International
organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of
electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are
described in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular, the different approval criteria needed for the
different types of ISO documents should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the
editorial rules of the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 (see www .iso .org/
