Overview

EN 885:2004 is the CEN (European Committee for Standardization) standard that specifies requirements for polyaluminium chloride hydroxide silicate used in the treatment of water intended for human consumption. The document describes the product’s identity, physical and chemical properties, minimum purity criteria, analytical and sampling methods, labelling, transportation and storage requirements, and rules for safe handling (Annex B). It cross-references analytical methods in EN 1302 and sampling guidance in ISO 3165 and ISO 6206.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope & identification: Defines the chemical name, synonyms, empirical composition ranges and CAS reference (94894‑80‑1). Commercial product is supplied as a liquid.
  • Physical & chemical properties: Typical appearance is colourless to yellow clear liquid; density ~1.20–1.25 g/ml for a 5.3 % Al product; fully miscible with water but acidic and liable to hydrolyse and precipitate aluminium hydroxide when diluted.
  • Composition requirements:
    • Minimum active matter (Al content) ≥ 50 g/kg.
    • Aluminium content tolerance: ±3% of manufacturer’s declared value.
    • Relative basicity (OH/3Al) > 0.35.
    • Insoluble matter ≤ 25 g/kg of Al.
  • Impurity limits: Sets trace-metal limits (mg/kg of Al) for different product types. Examples include arsenic (As) max. 14 / 40 / 100, cadmium (Cd) max. 3 / 50 / 100, chromium (Cr) max. 30 / 700 / 1 000, lead (Pb) max. 40 / 200 / 800 (for types 1/2/3 respectively).
  • Testing & sampling: Refers to EN 1302 for analyses and ISO sampling standards; specifies practical sampling procedures for drums, tanks and tankers.
  • Labelling, transport & storage:
    • Marking must include product name, net mass, supplier details and the statement “This product conforms to EN 885”.
    • Depending on composition the product can be regulated as corrosive (UN 1760; RID/ADR/IMDG/IATA class 8).
    • Storage: use corrosion‑resistant tanks; avoid contact with chlorites, hypochlorites, sulfites, galvanized metal, aluminium, copper, zinc and certain salts (e.g. iron salts, aluminium sulfate).

Applications and users

EN 885:2004 is primarily used by:

  • Water utilities and municipal drinking-water treatment plants selecting or specifying aluminium-based coagulants.
  • Chemical manufacturers and suppliers producing polyaluminium chloride hydroxide silicate.
  • Regulatory bodies assessing product conformity for water treatment use.
