FprEN 882 is a CEN draft European standard for sodium aluminate used in treatment of water intended for human consumption. It specifies the product’s characteristics, purity criteria, test methods, labelling, transport, storage and safety information for manufacturers, suppliers, laboratories and water-treatment operators.

What does FprEN 882 specify?

FprEN 882 applies to sodium aluminate used for treatment of water intended for human consumption. It brings together the product description, the quality limits, the linked analytical methods and the practical information needed for use in water treatment.

The document is organized into clauses 1 to 7, plus two annexes:

AnnexWhat it covers
Annex AGeneral information on sodium aluminate, including origin, manufacture, quality of the commercial product and use in treatment
Annex BGeneral rules relating to safety, including safe handling and emergency procedures

In practice, the structure moves from identification and purity to testing, then to delivery, marking, storage and operational safety.

What are the key requirements of FprEN 882?

FprEN 882 sets the product description, the purity limits and the handling information needed to specify and control sodium aluminate for drinking-water treatment. The most important points are in clauses 4 to 7 and Annexes A and B.

Product identification and characteristics

Clause 4 identifies sodium aluminate by chemical name, common name, formulae and registry numbers, and states that it is supplied as solids or solutions. It also describes the product’s appearance, density, solubility, viscosity and alkaline behavior. For a buyer or operator, this is the basis for ordering the right form and checking whether the product will fit the storage and dosing system.

Clause 4 also notes that sodium aluminate solutions are highly alkaline and can hydrolyse and form aluminium hydroxide if diluted too far or neutralized. In practice, that means dilution, pH control and process conditions matter to avoid precipitation and loss of performance.

Purity and chemical limits

Clause 5 sets minimum purity requirements and says the active matter content shall be within ±3 % of the manufacturer’s declared value. It also gives limits for impurities and chemical parameters, including iron and insoluble matter, and a three-type system for trace metals such as arsenic, cadmium, chromium, mercury, nickel, lead, antimony and selenium. This is what quality control uses to accept or reject a batch and what users use to match a grade to their water-quality targets.

Table 3 is especially important because it separates the product into Type 1, Type 2 and Type 3 chemical-parameter limits. That means a purchaser needs to select a type that matches the required drinking-water protection and the raw-water conditions.

Testing and analytical control

Clause 6 directs users to EN 1302 for sampling and for the relevant analytical methods. This matters because acceptance testing is tied to a referenced method set rather than an ad hoc local procedure. If you test incoming material or verify supplier results, this is the document you use together with FprEN 882.

Delivery, labelling, transport and marking

Clause 7 requires delivery in suitable containers or tankers, with corrosion-resistant materials for bulk liquids and packaging that does not contaminate the product. It also requires EU hazard labelling with the signal word Danger, the GHS05 pictogram and hazard statements for skin burns, eye damage and corrosion to metals. In practice, warehouse and logistics teams need this for safe receiving, handling and inventory control.

The marking on the package or delivery document must include the product name, trade name, type, net mass, supplier or manufacturer and a statement that the product complies with EN 882. Clause 7 also lists transport classifications for the solid and solution forms, so shipping staff can check whether transport rules apply.

Storage and incompatibilities

Clause 7.5 says storage tanks for solutions shall be corrosion-resistant and suitable for the product. It also warns against contact with acids and incompatible materials such as iron salts and aluminium sulfates/chlorides/polyaluminium chlorides. For operations, this reduces the risk of degradation, contamination and hazardous reactions, including hydrogen release from contact with some metals.

Use and safety guidance

Annex A explains that sodium aluminate is used as a coagulant and flocculant, and gives guidance on dilution, dosing, application and secondary effects. Annex B gives the safety rules, accident response, spill handling and fire guidance. These annexes are the practical operating notes for treatment-plant staff.

What terms does FprEN 882 define?

FprEN 882 does not provide a formal list of definitions, but it uses several key terms in a technical sense:

  • Sodium aluminate - The product covered by the standard, supplied as solids or solutions for water treatment.
  • Active matter - The sodium aluminate content expressed as the mass fraction of aluminium in the product.
  • Type 1, Type 2, Type 3 - The three purity levels used in Table 3 for different chemical-parameter limits.
  • Coagulant - A treatment chemical used to help particles and impurities gather into removable flocs.
  • Flocculant - A treatment chemical used to support the formation and removal of flocs in water treatment.
  • GHS05 - The corrosion hazard pictogram used with the labelling information for sodium aluminate.
  • eSDS - Extended safety data sheet, where precautionary statements should be shown for the substance.

Who uses FprEN 882?

FprEN 882 is used by manufacturers and suppliers of sodium aluminate, by water utilities and treatment-plant operators, and by laboratories that sample and analyze the product. It is also relevant to quality managers, buyers and logistics teams who need to specify the grade, check purity, manage storage and prepare transport and labelling.

In practice, it supports product selection, incoming inspection, dosing setup, hazard communication and emergency handling. It also helps users judge whether a given grade is suitable for a drinking-water process.

What changed in FprEN 882 from the previous edition?

FprEN 882 will supersede EN 882:2016. The foreword states that the significant technical change is an update of the information related to the Drinking Water Directive.

Which standards are used with FprEN 882?

FprEN 882 normatively references EN 1302, which provides the sampling and analytical methods for aluminium-based coagulants. The document also cites Directive (EU) 2020/2184 for drinking-water quality context and Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 for EU classification, labelling and packaging, which supports the hazard and compliance information used in the text.

What does the FprEN 882 document contain?

The document contains a product description section, purity criteria, test-method references, and operational guidance for delivery, labelling, transport and storage. It includes a viscosity table in clause 4, impurity and chemical-parameter tables in clause 5, and transport and marking instructions in clause 7.

Annex A adds descriptive tables on the possible impact of different sodium aluminate types on trace metals in treated water, together with guidance on function, dilution, dosing and secondary effects. Annex B gives safety instructions and emergency procedures for accident, spill and fire response.
