Overview
EN ISO 13445:2006 is an international standard that specifies a precise and reliable method to determine the shear strength of adhesive bonds between rigid substrates using the block-shear method. This standard is critical for evaluating adhesives used on materials with elastic moduli higher than the adhesive itself, such as metals, glass, ceramics, and plastics.
Developed under ISO/TC 61 and endorsed by CEN (European Committee for Standardization), EN ISO 13445:2006 ensures consistent assessment of adhesive performance, enabling manufacturers and engineers to validate bond durability and strength in various applications. The block-shear method is especially suitable for bonding rigid materials where machining of the substrate is difficult or impractical.
Key Topics
Scope: Focuses on adhesives bonding materials with higher elastic moduli than the adhesive and provides a quantitative measure of shear strength under static load.
Test Specimens: Specifies test dimensions for typical substrates:
- Metals: 25 mm × 25 mm × 6 mm
- Glass: 75 mm × 75 mm × 13 mm
- Other materials: 25 mm × 25 mm × 13 mm
Surface Preparation: Adherends must be prepared according to EN 13887 guidelines before bonding to ensure consistent adhesion.
Test Equipment:
- Tensile-testing machine with capacity of at least 45 kN, complying with ISO 7500-1
- Shearing fixture consisting of a specimen-holding block and a shearing tool designed to hold and apply shear load precisely
Testing Procedure:
- Conditioning specimens in standard atmospheres according to ISO 291
- Mounting specimens in the shearing fixture ensuring correct alignment
- Applying a controlled crosshead speed of 1.5 mm/min until failure
- Recording maximum force sustained and analyzing failure patterns per ISO 10365
Results Expression: Shear strength is calculated as maximum shear stress (force divided by bond area) and presented in megapascals (MPa). Multiple specimens (minimum five) are tested to yield average shear strength values.
Test Reporting: Comprehensive reporting guidelines include adhesive and adherend identification, specimen preparation, bonding conditions, adhesive thickness, test temperature, maximum shear stress values, average shear strength, and failure modes.
Applications
EN ISO 13445:2006 is widely applied in industries requiring reliable adhesive bonding of rigid substrates, including:
- Automotive and Aerospace: For bonding metal, ceramic, or composite components where shear strength dictates structural integrity.
- Electronics and Optics: Testing adhesive performance on glass, ceramics, or plastics used in sensitive assemblies.
- Construction and Manufacturing: Quality control of adhesives used in joining high-modulus materials.
- Material Research: Development and comparison of adhesive formulations under standardized shear testing.
- Quality Assurance: Verifying bonded joints in production lines using standardized shear strength data.
This method supports decisions related to adhesive selection, process optimization, and regulatory compliance by providing measurable and reproducible shear strength parameters.
Related Standards
To fully implement and understand the testing process, EN ISO 13445:2006 references several important related standards:
- ISO 291 – Plastics: Standard atmospheres for conditioning and testing, ensuring consistent specimen environmental conditions.
- ISO 7500-1 – Metallic materials: Verification and calibration of force-measuring systems on testing machines.
- ISO 10365 – Adhesives: Designation of main failure patterns for assessing joint integrity and identifying failure modes.
- EN 13887 – Structural adhesives: Guidelines for surface preparation of metals and plastics prior to bonding.
Adherence to these standards enables comprehensive evaluation of adhesive bond strength and ensures alignment with international best practices.
By following EN ISO 13445:2006, professionals in adhesive technology, materials testing, and quality control can accurately determine the shear strength of bonded joints on rigid substrates, supporting high-quality product development and ensuring safety and performance in demanding applications.
