Determination of the acoustic properties of markings - The CPX measurement method
This document outlines a method to measure the typical external noise emission produced when tyres of passenger car roll over a structured road marking. The result is a measure for the noise perceived in the surroundings of the road, hence not for interior noise in the car.
This method can be used for three purposes:
- determination of initial acoustic properties of a road marking, yielding a noise label for a given system;
- testing of the acoustic conformity of a particular marking to the noise label determined during the determination of initial acoustic properties;
- monitoring of the acoustic properties in the course of its lifetime.
The test result allows the road owner to make an assessment of the risk of nuisance when s/he considers a particular road marking system for application on a road in a noise sensitive area, e.g. built up areas. The method is also applicable to measurements on milled rumble strips.
- Bestimmung der anfänglichen akustischen Eigenschaften einer Straßenmarkierung, die zu einer Lärmkennzeichnung für ein bestimmtes System führen;
- Prüfung der akustischen Übereinstimmung einer bestimmten Markierung mit der bei der Bestimmung der ursprünglichen akustischen Eigenschaften ermittelten Lärmkennzeichnung;
- détermination des propriétés acoustiques initiales d’un marquage routier, conduisant à une indication du niveau sonore d’un système donné ;
- essai de conformité acoustique d’un marquage donné au regard de l’indication de niveau sonore obtenue lors de la détermination initiale des propriétés acoustiques ;
– določitev začetnih akustičnih lastnosti cestne označbe, da se določi oznaka za hrup za dani sistem;
– preskušanje akustične skladnosti posamezne oznake z oznako za hrup, določeno med opredelitvijo začetnih akustičnih lastnosti;

Overview
CEN/TS 17812:2022 specifies a standardized method for determining the acoustic properties of road markings using the Close Proximity (CPX) measurement method. Developed by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN), this technical specification focuses on measuring the external noise emissions generated when passenger car tyres roll over structured road markings. Importantly, CEN/TS 17812:2022 targets noise perceived outside the vehicle, not interior noise.
The measurement results provide road owners and authorities with a reliable noise profile of road markings, helping assess their suitability-especially in noise-sensitive areas such as urban or residential environments. Additionally, this method can be applied to milled rumble strips, ensuring broad applicability across various road marking systems.
Key Topics
Measurement Scope
The standard defines procedures to measure the noise produced by tyre/road interaction on structured markings. It excludes interior vehicle noise and centers on sound levels perceived in surrounding areas.Uses of the Method
- Determination of initial acoustic properties of a newly applied road marking, establishing a noise label for the system.
- Testing the acoustic conformity of a particular marking against the established noise label.
- Ongoing monitoring of acoustic properties throughout the lifespan of the marking.
CPX Measurement Method
The CPX method, based on EN ISO 11819-2:2017, employs a standardized "P1" reference tyre rolling at defined speeds (50, 80, 110 km/h) over marked pavement sections at least 100 meters long. Two microphones positioned in the close proximity of the tyre record the tyre/road noise. Key conditions include:- The rolling tyre must cover at least 80% of the marking width.
- Measurements are carried out in controlled temperature ranges (15 °C to 25 °C).
- Multiple runs are conducted for reproducibility, with allowable noise level variation capped at 0.5 dB.
Pavement and Marking Conditions
Tests require well-maintained asphaltic or concrete pavement without visible damage or fissures. Surface macrotexture must be measured and classified into roughness classes (RG1 to RG4) to account for noise influence due to pavement texture.Data Analysis and Reporting
Analysis covers calculation of equivalent continuous sound levels (LAeq) and third-octave band spectra to characterize noise profiles. Results account for variability across runs and relative noise difference against untreated pavement surfaces or virtual reference surfaces.
Detailed test reports must include product identification, measurement purpose, marking condition, environmental conditions, and equipment information.
Applications
Road Design and Planning
Planners use the CPX measurement results to select road marking systems with acceptable noise performance, particularly for roads near residential or noise-sensitive zones. This helps reduce community noise impact and supports compliance with environmental noise regulations.Quality Control and Compliance
Road marking manufacturers and contractors apply the standard to verify that installed markings conform acoustically to product specifications and initial type testing results.Noise Monitoring and Maintenance
Transportation agencies employ the method for periodic noise monitoring, enabling assessment of wear or degradation effects on acoustic performance over time and informing maintenance schedules.Rumble Strip Evaluation
The standard is adaptable for evaluating milled rumble strips, assisting in the balance between driver safety and noise pollution control.

Introduction
Structured road markings present one of several options to obtain an enhanced night time visibility
during rain or wetness. It is for this reason that they underwent a growing popularity in the last years.
Structured road markings can however also produce an increased noise emission during wheel passages,
which may be observed in the vehicle but also in the vicinity of the road. The sound increase inside the
car can be considered as a positive side effect, as it alarms the driver and may be very helpful for the
prevention of “doze off” traffic accidents. The sound increase perceived outside the car, however, may
have a positive aspect as it can warn people on the emergency lane about the approaching vehicle, but it
may as well annoy people living around.
It is desirable that a measurement method exists to assess the noise production of those road markings
during wheel passages which is representative, reproducible and generally applicable throughout
Europe. This document deals with a dedicated method which has been developed by the expert panel
“noise” of the CEN/TC 226/WG 2.
