Aluminium and aluminium alloys - Scrap - Part 16: Scrap consisting of skimmings, drosses, spills and metallics
This part of this European Standard specifies characteristics, chemical composition and metal yield of aluminium scrap consisting of skimmings, drosses and spills. It also applies to the metallic obtained by dry processing of drosses and skimmings. Full lots of dross fines with particle size smaller than 0,8 mm, or loft of drosses with a metal yield less than 30% are not within the scope of this Standard.

Overview
EN 13920-16:2003 (CEN) specifies requirements for aluminium scrap consisting of skimmings, drosses, spills and metallics. The standard defines general characteristics, limits on piece size and contamination, the requirement to agree chemical composition between supplier and purchaser, and the minimum metal yield expected from as-delivered material. It applies to metallics produced by dry processing of drosses and skimmings but excludes lots of dross fines below 0.8 mm or consignments with metal yield under 30%.
Key Topics
- Scope and exclusions
- Covers skimmings, drosses, spills and metallics resulting from aluminium processing.
- Excludes full lots of dross fines with particle size < 0.8 mm and lots with metal yield < 30%.
- Material characteristics
- Scrap must be free from moisture and foreign materials such as refractories, stones, plastics and wood.
- Maximum dimension of dross/skimmings pieces: 600 mm.
- Chemical composition
- Composition is agreed between supplier and purchaser; the standard does not mandate fixed alloy limits for these scrap categories.
- Metal yield
- Metal yield determined per EN 13920-1 and related to as-delivered mass shall be ≥ 30%.
- Quality management
- Sampling, testing, classification, treatment of non-conformities and arbitration follow the procedures in EN 13920-1.
- Ordering information (recommended to include)
- Reference number (EN 13920-16), scrap category, gross mass, delivery period, expected metal yield and any deviations from standard characteristics.
- Origin of scrap (e.g., primary smelter, remelter, foundry) and piece size where meaningful.
Applications
EN 13920-16:2003 is designed to facilitate consistent specification, trade and recycling of aluminium dross-related scrap. Typical users and benefits include:
- Recyclers and remelters: clearer acceptance criteria and expected metal recovery for process planning.
- Foundries and smelters: defined limits on contaminants and piece size to protect furnaces and improve metallurgical performance.
- Buyers and traders: standardized ordering information and agreed composition reduce disputes and support reliable sourcing.
- Quality control teams: a framework for sampling, testing and handling non-conforming consignments using EN 13920-1 procedures.
