Overview

EN 13322-2:2003/A1:2006 is a CEN amendment to the European standard for transportable gas cylinders, specifically the design and construction of refillable welded stainless steel cylinders. Prepared by CEN/TC 23 with the UK secretariat held by BSI, this amendment was approved on 15 June 2006 and was to be adopted as a national standard by CEN members by January 2007. The amendment corrects editorial items in the English title and updates key inspection requirements.

Keywords: transportable gas cylinders, refillable welded stainless steel, design and construction, radiographic examination, weld quality, CEN, EU harmonization.

Key Topics

  • Scope and purpose: Establishes harmonized requirements for the safe design and construction of refillable welded stainless steel transportable gas cylinders to support uniform national implementation across CEN member states.
  • Amendment details: The A1 amendment rectifies a typographical error in the English title and replaces Table A.1, which sets out requirements for radiographic examination (sampling frequency, zones of inspection and related controls) for different cylinder and weld types.
  • Standards governance: Confirms the role of CEN and national bodies in adopting the amendment and the obligation to withdraw conflicting national standards.

Applications

This standard and its amendment are practically valuable to several stakeholders:

  • Cylinder manufacturers: Guidance for material selection, welded-stainless-steel design practices and required inspection regimes to demonstrate compliance.
  • Welding engineers and fabricators: Clear expectations for weld quality control, radiographic-based inspection planning and machine adjustment triggers for re-examination.
  • Inspection and conformity bodies: Basis for sampling plans, radiographic examination protocols and national implementation of EU-harmonized requirements.
  • Safety managers and users: Assurance that cylinders produced to these requirements meet recognized European safety and inspection norms.

Benefits include improved weld integrity, consistent radiographic inspection practice, and streamlined compliance across EU member states.

Related Standards

  • EN 13322-2:2003 (base document) - this amendment modifies that edition.
  • CEN/TC 23 documents and national adoptions - the amendment must be implemented by national standards bodies listed in the foreword.

For organisations involved in cylinder design, fabrication or certification, EN 13322-2:2003/A1:2006 provides essential, harmonized guidance on stainless steel refillable welded cylinder construction and inspection practice. Refer to the full published standard and the replaced Table A.1 for detailed radiographic examination rules and sampling frequencies.
