Overview
CEN/TS 17773:2022 defines a standardized, gravimetric procedure to determine the dry matter (dry residue) of organic and organo-mineral fertilizers. Applicable to products classified under PFC 1(A) and PFC 1(B) (and their component in PFC 7 under Regulation (EU) 2019/1009), the method converts analytical results to a dry-matter basis so parameters reported are comparable and legally defensible. Note: the method was not validated for blends.
The method is based on oven-drying at (105 ± 2) °C and is suitable for solid samples and samples that become solid during drying. Volatile compounds lost up to 105 °C are treated as water in this procedure.
Key Topics
- Principle: Dry samples to constant mass at 105 ± 2 °C and calculate the dry residue by mass difference.
- Sampling & preparation: Follow EN 1482 principles with adaptations for organic/organo-mineral fertilizers. Document sampling details in the test report.
- Two procedures:
- Procedure A - for general solid or liquid fertilizers (place sample directly in dish/crucible).
- Procedure B - for liquids prone to forming a crust; mix sample with inert sand or diatomaceous earth to prevent caking.
- Apparatus & reagents: Thermostatically controlled oven, desiccator with drying agent, analytical balance (readability 1 mg), evaporating dish/crucible and inert sand (if using Procedure B).
- Quality control: Duplicate analyses are recommended where homogeneity is uncertain; at least one duplicate per batch.
Procedure highlights and calculation
- Precondition dish/crucible in the oven, cool in desiccator and record empty mass (m_a).
- Weigh loaded dish (m_b), dry until residue appears dry (typically overnight), cool and weigh dried dish (m_c).
- Dryness is confirmed when a further 1 h drying changes mass by ≤ 0.5 % or 2 mg (whichever is greater). If mass remains unstable after three cycles, stop after at least 16 h and report results.
Calculation (mass fraction):
w_dr = (m_c − m_a) / (m_b − m_a) × f
where f = 100 for % or 1000 for g/kg.
Applications
- Conversion of analytical results (nutrients, contaminants) to a dry-matter basis for reporting and regulatory compliance.
- Routine laboratory quality control for organic and organo-mineral fertilizer manufacturing and distribution.
- Use in conformity assessment under Regulation (EU) 2019/1009 for PFC 1(A) and 1(B) products.
Practical notes: avoid samples that may release flammable or explosive gases during drying; when using an inert matrix, verify it does not decompose or retain moisture that biases results. Other validated drying techniques (e.g., infrared) are permitted if demonstrated to give comparable results and recorded in the test report.
