Overview

EN 15561:2023 (CEN) specifies a standard analytical method for the determination of total nitrogen in calcium cyanamide fertilizers that contain nitrates. The method covers sample preparation, reduction of nitrate to ammonia, digestion, distillation and back-titration to quantify total nitrogen. It is intended for conformity testing, quality control and regulatory verification of inorganic fertilizers.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope: Applicable to calcium cyanamide containing nitrates; supersedes EN 15561:2009.
  • Analytical principle: Reduction of nitrate-nitrogen to ammonia using powdered iron and stannous chloride, digestion in sulfuric acid, Kjeldahl-style distillation of ammonia, absorption in standard sulfuric acid and back-titration with sodium or potassium hydroxide.
  • Reagents: Specified analytical-grade reagents including concentrated sulfuric acid, powdered iron (reduced), stannous chloride solution (prepared and checked for reducing power), sodium hydroxide (30 % m/v, ammonia-free), potassium sulfate, pumice anti-bump granules and indicator solutions (mixed indicator or methyl red).
  • Apparatus: Kjeldahl/distillation apparatus (borosilicate glass), Kjeldahl flasks (300–500 ml), pipettes (50 / 100 / 200 ml), 250 ml graduated flasks and 50 ml burettes.
  • Procedure variants: Three validated variants (a, b, c) differing by aliquot of prepared sample distilled (50 / 100 / 200 ml), sulfuric acid strength for absorption and titrant concentration. Table 1 in the standard gives the corresponding calculation factors (variant a: 0.70; b: 0.70; c: 0.875).
  • Quality checks: Mandatory blank test and a control test using a specified standard nitrate–ammoniacal solution to verify apparatus and technique.
  • Result expression and reporting: Total nitrogen expressed as percentage mass fraction. Test report must include sample identification, method reference (EN 15561:2023), results, sampling details, analysis completion date and any deviations/incidents.

Applications and users

  • Who uses it: fertilizer manufacturers, independent analytical laboratories, national quality control and regulatory agencies, importers/exporters and research labs involved in fertilizer characterization.
  • Practical uses:
    • Routine quality control of calcium cyanamide products that may contain nitrate impurities.
    • Compliance testing for labeling and regulatory limits on nitrogen content.
    • Verification of production processes where accurate total nitrogen measurement is required.
    • Method transfer and validation in accredited testing laboratories.
