Aerospace series - Paints and varnishes - Corrosion resistant chromate-free two component cold curing primer - Part 001: Basic requirements

This standard specifies the basic requirements for a two component, cold curing, chromate-free epoxy or polyurethane, corrosion resistant primer which can be used with or without a finish for aerospace applications.
The properties specified in this standard are obtained on defined aluminium alloy test pieces prepared in accordance with EN 3837, process A and ISO 3270. The ability of the material to be used for a specific application (e.g. alternative substrate, alternative primer, specific drying conditions etc.) shall be determined by supplementary tests to confirm that the requirements of this standard are met.

Overview

EN 2436-001:2006 defines the basic requirements for a two-component, cold-curing, chromate-free, corrosion-resistant primer intended for aerospace applications. The primer can be an epoxy (Type A) or polyurethane (Type B) system and may be used with or without a finish coat. Properties in this standard are obtained on defined aluminium-alloy test pieces prepared in accordance with EN 3837 (process A) and ISO 3270. Where the primer is to be used on alternative substrates or under different processing conditions, supplementary testing is required to confirm compliance.

Key Topics

  • Scope and classification: Primer types are classified by chemical reaction mechanism - Type A (epoxy with amino activator) and Type B (hydroxyl resin with polyisocyanate activator).
  • Formulation and application: The standard describes the form of product (base, activator, thinner if required) and instructs mixing in whole-number proportions by volume or weight as per manufacturer guidance. Typical dry film thickness is 20 ± 5 µm.
  • Testing regime:
    • Batch release tests: Tests marked with * in the standard's tables are required for batch acceptance.
    • Qualification tests: Full set of tests in Tables 1–5 must be completed for product qualification.
    • Representative tests referenced include adhesion, scratch resistance, viscosity/fineness, VOC and density checks, and drying characteristics.
  • Environmental and durability requirements: The standard sets performance checks for exposure and resistance, including:
    • Resistance to fluids (e.g. tri-n-butyl phosphate to EN 2379 G2 for 24 h at (70 ± 2) °C) with no blistering or lifting.
    • Water exposure (water to ISO 3696 Grade 2 for 336 h) with no film defect.
    • Corrosion resistance assessed by neutral salt spray test (1 000 h) with limits on blistering, detachment, pitting and corrosion near scribe lines.
  • Referenced test methods and documentation: EN 3840 (technical specification), EN 3837 (surface preparation), EN 2334 (pickling), ISO 3270 (conditioning), ISO 1513 and TR 7000-9 are among the normative references.

Applications

This standard is targeted at manufacturers, suppliers and end-users in the aerospace industry who specify or validate primers for airframe and related structures. It supports:

  • Selection and qualification of chromate-free, corrosion-resistant primers for aluminium alloys
  • Batch release and ongoing quality control of two-component cold-curing primer systems
  • Demonstration of adhesion, corrosion protection and compatibility with subsequent finishes or direct exposure

Related Standards

  • EN 3840 - Aerospace paints and varnishes: technical specification
  • EN 3837 - Surface preparation and test-piece nature
  • EN 2334 - Chromic-sulphuric acid pickle of aluminium alloys
  • EN 2379 - Fluids for assessment of non-metallic materials
  • EN 4385 - Organisation of aerospace non-metallic materials standards
  • ISO 3270, ISO 1513 and TR 7000-9

Practical value: EN 2436-001:2006 provides a prescriptive baseline for chromate-free aerospace primers, helping manufacturers and users ensure consistent corrosion protection, adhesion and regulatory-aligned batch qualification for aluminium-based aerospace substrates.
