Overview

EN ISO 17694:2016 (ISO 17694:2016) specifies a standardized laboratory method to determine the flex resistance of footwear uppers and linings, irrespective of material. The test simulates damage caused by inward folding of the vamp (forepart) and assesses material durability for the intended end use. This European adoption by CEN supersedes EN 13512:2001 and aligns with ISO footwear test practice.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope: Measures resistance to cracking or failure at flexing creases for uppers and linings.
  • Test specimens: Rectangular pieces cut from the vamp or sheet material. Typical cutter size references: press knife ~70 × 45 mm; specimen length must remain (70 ± 1) mm.
  • Orientation: Half specimens cut along the material direction and half perpendicular (backbone/warp/machine directions).
  • Flexing machine requirements: Based on ISO 5402-1 (flexometer method):
    • Oscillation angle of the upper clamp: 22°30′ ± 0°30′.
    • Oscillation speed: 100 ± 5 cycles/min.
    • Distance between clamps (upper horizontal position): 25 ± 1 mm.
    • At least four pairs of clamps and means to count cycles.
  • Conditioning modes: Tests may be performed dry, wet, or cold:
    • Dry: specimens conditioned in a standard atmosphere per ISO 18454 for ≥24 h.
    • Wet: specimens water-saturated using distilled/deionised water (ISO 3696 Grade 3) and vacuum submersion (<4 kPa) before immediate testing.
    • Cold: test machine and specimens placed in a cold cabinet (typical test at -5 ± 2 °C; lower temperatures down to -30 °C are possible).
  • Test procedure: Specimens folded into clamps with surface orientation specified (uppers face up, linings face down), flexed for a predetermined number of cycles, then visually examined (magnifier suggested) for cracks, failure or salt spue.
  • Sample counts: Standard guidance (examples): grain leather - 2 dry / 2 wet; coated leather - 2 dry / 2 wet / 2 cold; fabric/coated fabric - 4 specimens in specified modes (see standard for full table).

Applications and users

  • Footwear manufacturers - validate upper and lining materials for expected service life.
  • Materials suppliers - compare formulations (leathers, coated fabrics, textiles) for flex durability.
  • Independent test laboratories / QA teams - perform compliance and comparative testing.
  • Design and R&D engineers - select materials and construction methods that resist flex damage.
  • Regulatory and procurement - specify performance requirements in product standards and procurement specs.

Related standards

  • ISO 5402-1:2011 - Flexometer method for leather (apparatus reference).
  • ISO 17709 / EN 13400 - Sampling location and specimen preparation.
  • ISO 18454 / EN 12222 - Standard atmospheres for conditioning and testing.
  • ISO 3696 - Water quality for analytical use.

Using EN ISO 17694:2016 ensures consistent, repeatable measurement of flex resistance - a key indicator of upper and lining durability for footwear performance and consumer satisfaction.
