This European Prestandard specifies mandatory and otional interfaces between devices and machine readable cards, as well as other interfaces only to the extent that they are related to the processing of the machine readable card. It specifies the characteristics of each particular interface, and provides the means, through the use of bitmap coding, of readily identifying the capabilitiesof devices in order to ensure the compatibility between specific devices and cards. As far as technical specifications are concerned, it refers to other existing standards.

Diese Norm legt verbindliche und wahlfreie Schnittstellen zwischen Endgeräten und maschinenlesbaren Karten fest ebenso, wie andere Schnittstellen insoweit siesich auf die Verarbeitung von maschinenlesbaren Karten beziehen. Sie beschreibt die Eigenschaften jeder einzelnen Schnittstelle und stellt durch Verwendung einer Bitmap-Kodierung die Mögligkeit zur Verfügung, sofort die Kompati- bilität zwischen bestimmten Endgeräten und Karten zu ermitteln. Soweit es technische Eigenschaften betrifft, wird auf andere bestehende Standards verwiesen.

La présente norme européenne prescrit les interfaces obligatoires et option- nelles entre les dispositifs de lecture et les cartes lisibles par machine, ainsi que toute autre interface uniquement dans la mesure où celle-ci est néces-saire au traitement de la carte lisible par machine. Elle prescrit également lescaractéristiques de chaque interface et permet d'établir aisément, par l'intermédiaire du codage par topogramme binaire, l'aptitude des dispositifs de lecture à assurer la compatibilité entre des dispositifs de lecture particulierset les cartes.
