Overview

EN 846-6:2012 (CEN) - Methods of test for ancillary components for masonry, Part 6 - specifies a single end test to determine the tensile and compressive load capacity and load–displacement characteristics of wall ties. It covers ties that are screwed, nailed, grouted or otherwise attached to frame elements or to inner leaf materials (not by embedding the inner end in a mortar joint). The standard is intended for assessing ties used to connect masonry leaves to frame structures and inner leaves of cavity walls.

Key topics and requirements

  • Test principle: The tie is fixed to a representative section of the frame or inner leaf and loaded in tension or compression until failure; displacement is recorded to produce load–displacement curves.
  • Specimen numbers and preparation: Ten specimens are required for tension and ten for compression at the declared minimum embedment length; numbers double if both asymmetric ends are tested.
  • Materials & conditioning: Timber studs per EN 338 (strength class C24, density ≤ 600 kg/m³, moisture 9–15%), OSB sheathing per EN 300 (typically 400 ±10 mm square, ≥ 8 mm thick), representative metal or concrete elements, masonry units per EN 771 and conditioning per EN 772 series.
  • Apparatus & measurement: Rigid support avoiding restraint within 2× embedment depth or 100 mm; clamps for tie ends; load cell with max 2% full-scale error; displacement measurement to 0.01 mm using symmetrical dial gauges or LVDTs.
  • Special cases: For slope- or movement-tolerant ties, specimens are cycled 50 times through the design movement prior to test. Slot-type anchors require concrete to EN 206-1 (minimum class C20/25).
  • Reporting: Test report must include specimen details, embedment, conditioning, failure mode and load–displacement data.
