Overview

EN 4054:2004 - Aerospace series - specifies the technical requirements, qualification and acceptance criteria for seals used in flanged pipe couplings where the sealing element is made of fluorocarbon rubber (FPM/FKM) and the armature (reinforcement) is in aluminium alloy. It applies to seals for aerospace fluid and hydraulic systems and is intended for use whenever the standard is referenced in procurement, design and quality control.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Materials and construction
    • Seals: fluorocarbon rubber compounded and moulded onto an aluminium-alloy armature.
    • Armature and rubber materials must comply with the product / definition document specified by the manufacturer.
  • Qualification and acceptance
    • Qualification testing per EN 9133 on representative samples; acceptance inspections carried out batch-by-batch by the manufacturer.
    • Sampling plans use ISO 2859-1 (AQL / LQ principles); specific sample sizes and acceptance numbers are defined in the standard.
  • Performance tests
    • Ageing and pressurizing (Annex A): assembled seals are aged at 150 °C and periodically pressurized at ambient temperature through staged pressures (1 to 15 MPa). Requirement: hold a minimum of 10 MPa after accumulated 48 days of ageing.
    • Fluid resistance (Annex B): immersion/exposure tests in oil (liquid 101) and fuel (liquid B) per ISO 1817 / EN 2798 to measure swelling, volume change and creep; visual inspection for armature looseness.
  • Physical inspections
    • Visual inspection (100% for some checks) for surface discontinuities (cracks, seams, burrs) on armature and rubber; dimensional checks at 20 ± 5 °C.
    • Assembly seating strength and compatible torque requirements to ensure metal-to-metal contact where required.
  • Packaging, marking and storage
    • Individual watertight, opaque, ozone/oil/grease-proof packages (no PVC or transparent materials).
    • Marking: manufacturer ID, product identity, batch number, vulcanization date (quarter/year), “UNLIMITED SHELF LIFE”, inspection stamp.
    • Storage requirements refer to EN 2751; standard allows unlimited shelf life when stored per requirements.

Applications and users

  • Primary users: aerospace manufacturers, OEMs, suppliers of hydraulic/fluid system components, quality engineers, procurement and inspection teams.
  • Typical applications: flanged pipe couplings in aircraft hydraulic and fluid systems where high-temperature and chemical resistance (fuel/oil) are essential.
  • Use cases: component specification for procurement, incoming inspection and lot acceptance, qualification of new seal designs or compound batches, and supplier quality agreements.

Related standards

  • ISO 1817 (rubber - effect of liquids)
  • ISO 2859-1 (sampling procedures, AQL)

  • EN 2798 (FPM properties)
