The text of ISO 14050:2009 has been prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 207 “Environmental
management” of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and has been taken over as EN ISO
14050:2010.
This European Standard shall be given the status of a national standard, either by publication of an identical
text or by endorsement, at the latest by November 2010, and conflicting national standards shall be withdrawn
at the latest by November 2010.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent
rights. CEN [and/or CENELEC] shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
According to the CEN/CENELEC Internal Regulations, the national standards organizations of the following

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent
rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
ISO 14050 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 207, Environmental management.
This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition (ISO 14050:2002), which has been technically
revised to include new and updated ISO/TC 207 documents.

gouvernementales, en liaison avec l'ISO participent également aux travaux. L'ISO collabore étroitement avec
la Commission électrotechnique internationale (CEI) en ce qui concerne la normalisation électrotechnique.

Introduction
This International Standard contains concepts and their definitions as used in the ISO 14000 series of
International Standards related to environmental management.
Communication is important in the implementation and operation of environmental management systems. This
communication will be most effective if there is a common understanding of the terms used.
Many environmental terms and definitions are the result of recently developed concepts. The gradual
evolution of these environmental concepts inevitably means that environmental terminology will continue to
develop. The purpose of this International Standard is to convey an understanding of the terms used in the
ISO 14000 series of International Standards.
This International Standard is intended above all to provide standards users with a compilation of the terms
and definitions in use in the field of environmental management. It is expected, however, that the document
will also be of use to standards developers, particularly those involved with translation, as an aid to
maintaining consistency.
The terms and definitions in this International Standard are derived from the International Standards on
environmental management given in the Bibliography.
Because of the ongoing work on the development of environmental management standards within
ISO/TC 207, and in cooperation with ISO/TC 176, including the publication of additional and revised
International Standards, this International Standard will be reviewed and, as appropriate, revised or amended.
Other concepts which may be encountered in the environmental management field are not defined in this
International Standard. However, to aid users of the ISO 14000 series of International Standards on
environmental management, some of these additional concepts are included with bibliographic references in
Annex A.
Users should be aware that the application and description of these concepts vary throughout the international
environmental community. Their presence in Annex A is not intended to promote or endorse the use of these
concepts.

Normes internationales de l'ISO 14000 relatives au management environnemental.
La communication est importante dans la réalisation et le fonctionnement des systèmes de management
environnemental. Cette communication sera d'autant plus efficace qu'il existera une définition commune des
termes employés.
Beaucoup de termes et de définitions liés à l'environnement sont le résultat de notions récemment
développées. Cette évolution progressive de ces notions environnementales signifie inévitablement que la
terminologie environnementale va continuer à se développer. L'objet de ce document est de définir la
signification des termes utilisés dans la série de Normes internationales de l'ISO 14000 relatives au
management environnemental.
Le principal objectif de cette norme internationale est de fournir aux utilisateurs de normes une compilation
