Overview
EN 2242:2012 - Aerospace series - specifies requirements and procedures to ensure high-quality crimped connections for multi‑stranded electric cables used in aerospace applications. The standard applies to conductor cross‑sections from 0.15 mm² (AWG 26) to 107 mm² (AWG 0000) and covers all types of connection components (barrel, terminal lug, splice). It defines preparation, tooling, inspection and test methods to qualify and control crimping processes in accordance with aerospace quality expectations.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and materials
- Applies to multi‑stranded cables whose construction conforms to related aerospace cable/product standards (see Related Standards).
- Conductors and cable stripping must follow specified EN documents.
- Tooling and crimp process
- Crimping must be a single‑operation mechanical process using tooling approved by the connection component manufacturer and responsible authorities.
- Tools must include a crimping mechanism preventing return to open position before cycle completion and be inspected regularly.
- No additional heating, brazing or post‑crimp operations are allowed.
- Preparation and test pieces
- Test pieces are prepared for each “conductor – crimp tool – crimp barrel” combination prior to production.
- For double‑conductor crimps, EN 2242:2012 specifies compatibility, equal stripping lengths and tensile requirements per conductor.
- Inspection and tests after crimping
- Visual inspection of all crimped connections (correct form, stripping length, conductor visible through inspection hole, no burrs or cracks).
- Tensile strength test on representative test pieces per EN 2591-417; minimum tensile values are defined in the standard (Table 1).
- Periodic requalification is required if materials, tool types or component sizes change.
- Quality assurance
- Production controls: visual inspection of every crimp.
- Periodic inspection frequency: between 1 000 and 5 000 crimps or quarterly, with specified sample sizes; tensile testing may be limited to 500 N for sections ≥ 5 mm² if authorized.
Applications and users
- Aerospace OEMs and suppliers producing wiring harnesses and electrical interconnections.
- Crimp tool and terminal manufacturers for process qualification and tool approval.
- Quality, inspection and manufacturing engineers responsible for wire termination, assembly and certification.
- Certification bodies and test labs conducting tensile and visual tests on crimped connections.
