Overview - EN 13880-11:2003 (Hot applied joint sealants / asphalt test blocks)

EN 13880-11:2003 is a CEN test method that specifies how to prepare laboratory asphalt blocks used when evaluating hot applied joint sealants. The standard covers the preparation, compaction, conditioning, cutting and storage of asphalt specimens intended for use in the function test (prEN 13880-7) and compatibility testing with asphalt pavements (EN 13880-9). It ensures repeatable, representative asphalt test blocks for reliable sealant performance assessment.

Key technical topics and requirements

  • Purpose: Produce homogenous asphalt blocks for joint sealant function and compatibility tests.
  • Principle: Heat hot-mix asphalt, transfer to a moulding box and compact by vibration to form a homogenous block; cool and saw to required specimen sizes.
  • Heating: Asphalt heated to 180 °C in a closed container in accordance with ISO 188.
  • Moulding and compaction: Use a moulding box (depth 100 mm) and compact per EN 12697-32 (vibratory compactor) to achieve a uniform block.
  • Air voids: Target air void content 2 % to 4 % (volume).
  • Asphalt mix recipe (required quality):
    • Bitumen content: 6.4 % by mass, penetration grade 70/100 per EN 12591
    • Aggregate grading (total 0/16 mm):
      • Chippings 2/16 mm: 52 %
      • Sand 0,075/2 mm: 38 %
      • Filler 0/0,075 mm: 10 %
    • Aggregates in accordance with EN 13043
  • Specimen sizes:
    • For prEN 13880-7: (75 ± 1) mm × (25.0 ± 0.5) mm × (12.0 ± 0.5) mm
    • For EN 13880-9: (100 ± 1) mm × (100 ± 1) mm × (100 ± 1) mm
  • Storage: Store specimens refrigerated at –2 °C to –4 °C until testing to prevent sticking.
  • Reporting: Document mix composition, production date/time, aggregate origin/size distribution, preparation/storage dates, and preparator/laboratory ID.

Applications and users

This standard is designed for consistent preparation of asphalt substrates used when testing hot-applied joint sealants. Typical users include:

  • Pavement materials laboratories
  • Joint sealant manufacturers and R&D teams
  • Highway authorities and pavement consultants conducting compatibility and function testing
  • Certification and conformity assessment bodies performing standardized sealant tests
