Overview
EN 2266-005:2005 is a CEN aerospace product standard that defines the requirements for UV laser printable electrical cables intended for on‑board aircraft electrical systems. The standard covers cables designed for continuous operating temperatures from −55 °C to 200 °C, and specifies materials, construction, marking methods and required performance tests. It also permits hot‑stamp and ink‑jet marking in accordance with EN 3838.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Operating temperature range: −55 °C to 200 °C (high‑temperature aerospace applications).
- Insulation system: two polyimide layers (nominal 30 µm each) coated on both sides with 2.5 µm fluorocarbon; layers wound with ≥51% overlap in opposite directions; top coat of dispersion fluorocarbon with minimum 10 µm wall thickness formulated for UV laser marking acceptance.
- Conductor and construction: copper or copper‑alloy conductors per EN 2083; overall construction and dimensions reference EN 2084 (nominal sections from 0.15 mm2 to 5 mm2 with corresponding AWG equivalents, diameters and mass).
- Marking compatibility: designed for UV laser printing; also compatible with hot‑stamp and ink‑jet markings as required by EN 3838.
- Performance and testing: mandatory tests per EN 3475‑100 series and EN 2084, including visual, dimensional, insulation resistance, voltage proof, thermal ageing, thermal endurance (40 000 h at 200 °C), flammability (extinguishing time ≤ 3 s), resistance to fluids, strippability and more. Dynamic cut‑through forces vary by conductor size (approx. 70–180 N at 20 °C and 50–160 N at 200 °C depending on nominal section).
- Quality assurance & designation: quality system per EN 9133; standard provides a designation format and identification/packaging rules referencing EN 2084 and EN 2266‑002.
Applications and who uses this standard
- Aircraft wiring harness manufacturers selecting high‑temperature, UV‑markable wires for avionics and power systems.
- OEMs and maintenance organizations ensuring cable identification integrity over long service life at elevated temperatures.
- Procurement and quality engineers specifying components compliant with aerospace test regimes and marking standards.
- Certification and test labs verifying thermal endurance, flame behaviour and marking permanence for on‑board electrical systems.
Benefits: ensures consistent material and marking performance for high‑temperature aerospace cables, simplifies supplier qualification, and supports traceability and maintenance through durable UV laser and alternative marking methods.
