Overview
EN 14086:2003 - Paper and board: Measurement of specular gloss - 45° gloss with a parallel beam (DIN method) is a CEN photometric test standard for assessing visual gloss of plane paper and board surfaces using a reflectometer at a 45° angle. It applies primarily to glossy papers and boards (reflectometer values above approximately 7) and permits measurement of materials containing optical brightening agents. The method uses a parallel (collimated) beam geometry commonly referred to as the 45° DIN method.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Measurement principle: illumination with a collimated beam at 45° to the surface normal; detection of reflected light within a defined solid angle centered on the specular direction.
- Reflectometer value: scale calibrated so a defined specularly reflecting surface (black glass or fused quartz wedge) is assigned a value of 100; values are proportional to the integrated indicatrix within the instrument aperture.
- Apparatus (Annex A): collimator, decollimator, light-source supply, photoelectronic receptor and sample holder consistent with specified geometric and spectral properties.
- Gloss standards:
- Zero-gloss standard (e.g., black cavity lined with velvet) for zero adjustment.
- Primary gloss standard based on refractive index (nominal n = 1.567 at 587.6 nm) and Fresnel calculation; defines the 100-point reference.
- Working gloss standards (flat non‑fluorescent surfaces, R ≈ 80–100) and intermediate standards (assigned values across 0–100 for device checks).
- Calibration/checks:
- Zero standard adjusted to 0.0 ± 0.1.
- Calibrate to primary or working standard assigned value.
- Verify an intermediate standard (≈50) agrees within ±0.5 units.
- Sample conditioning and preparation: condition samples at 23 °C and 50% r.h. (EN 20187); at least five test pieces per side (increase number if measurement field <100 mm² - minimum N = ceil(5×100/A), A = measurement area in mm²). Avoid scratches, dust and contact with the measurement surface.
- Reporting: includes instrument, standards used, calibration status, number of replicates and measured reflectometer values.
Applications and users
- Paper, board and coating manufacturers - routine quality control and batch acceptance for glossy grades.
- Coater and converter operations - confirm surface finish specification after coating or calendaring.
- Independent testing laboratories and certification bodies - standardized gloss reporting for commercial specifications.
- Instrument manufacturers - compliance and calibration requirements for 45° DIN reflectometers.

between surfaces of high gloss.NOTE 3Manufacturers of coated papers usually divide their products into two classes, according to their surface gloss: mattcoating and gloss coating. However, these classes are only defined approximately. The glossy class has reflectometer values, measured according to this European Standard, above approximately 7, the matt class has reflectometer values lower than thisvalue. As there is no precise correlation between reflectometer values measured with different geometries, it is advisable tocompare the reflectometer values only within a single class of papers and using the same measuring geometry. This European Standard describes measurement at an angle of incidence of 45° using a parallel beam geometrycommonly known as the 45° DIN method. A second European Standard describes measurement at an angle of 75°(see EN ISO 8254-2).1 ScopeThis European Standard specifies a photometric test method for the assessment of visual gloss by means of areflectometer value measured at an angle of 45°.
