Overview

EN 13753:2009 (CEN) is the European product standard for granular activated alumina used in the treatment of water intended for human consumption. The standard defines identification, physical and chemical characteristics, minimum performance requirements and the corresponding test methods. It also provides practical guidance on delivery, labelling, storage and safe handling for suppliers, water utilities and regulatory bodies.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope and identification
    • Chemical name: aluminium oxide (partially hydroxylated), formula Al2O(3‑x)(OH)2x; CAS 1344‑28‑1, EINECS 215‑691‑6.
  • Physical properties
    • Appearance: white, irregular granular particles, visibly free of extraneous matter.
    • Particle size: specified by effective size (d10 ±5%), uniformity coefficient U < 1.5 and minimum size (d1 ±5%), or by agreed particle size ranges (e.g. 1.4–2.0 mm, 2.0–4.74 mm). Oversize + undersize mass fraction ≤ 15%; undersize ≤ 5%.
    • Bulk (packed) density: > 600 kg/m3.
  • Chemical and specific properties
    • Surface area: ≥ 200 m2/g (BET method).
    • Typical composition (indicative maxima): water (loss on ignition) ~5.5–6%, Na2O 0.5%, Fe2O3 0.015%, SiO2 0.02%, TiO2 0.002%; remainder Al2O3.
  • Test methods
    • Referenced standards: EN 12901, EN 12902 and ISO 9277 (BET surface area, degassing ≤ 200 °C).
  • Labelling, transport and storage
    • Delivery forms: bulk, semi‑bulk, drums or bags. Marking must include product name/grade, net mass, supplier, and the statement “this product conforms to EN 13753”.
    • Product is hygroscopic but chemically stable for at least two years if kept dry and sealed. Store away from moisture, strong acids/alkalis, solvents and odorous products.
  • Safety classification
    • At publication, not listed as a dangerous substance or a hazardous transport item; users should apply applicable EU directives and national regulations.

Applications

  • Primary function: adsorption/ion‑exchange adsorbent for removal of inorganic ions and polar organics from drinking water, notably fluoride, arsenate, chromate and some polar organic contaminants.
  • Used in purpose‑built adsorbers or as a filter medium; may require conditioning (e.g., aluminium sulphate for fluoride removal), periodic regeneration (e.g., NaOH neutralisation, water wash, H2SO4 reactivation) and backwashing for suspended solids removal.

Who uses this standard

  • Water utilities and plant operators
  • Material suppliers and manufacturers of adsorbents and filter media
  • Water treatment design engineers and consultants
  • Testing laboratories and conformity assessors
  • Regulators and procurement specialists

Related standards

  • EN 12901, EN 12902 (definitions and test methods for inorganic supporting/filtering materials)
  • ISO 9277 (BET surface area)
  • EU Drinking Water Directive (98/83/EC) for national regulatory context
