Overview
EN 892:2012/prA1:2015 is a CEN European standard (draft amendment) that defines safety requirements and test methods for dynamic mountaineering ropes. It applies to single, half and twin ropes in kernmantel construction intended for mountaineering and climbing. The amendment updates test procedures in the base document EN 892:2012 and supports conformity with relevant EU directives.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Rope types covered: single, half and twin dynamic ropes (kernmantel construction).
- Test attachments and knots: use a figure-of-eight knot with an internal loop length of (50 ± 10) mm; for twin ropes use a single figure-of-eight in the middle so both strands are parallel and equally tight.
- Test rig geometry: falling mass position and attachment heights are specified (e.g. 3 000 ± 200 mm below the orifice; raising to 2 300 ± 10 mm for drop set-up).
- Pre‑loading and static conditions: apply static loads for specified durations (e.g. 60 s) and use a 10 kg mass under clamps prior to drops to remove slack.
- Drop sequence and timing:
- Time between the falling mass passing upper and lower timing points must be 121 ms (tolerance +1.9 / −0.4 ms) - if outside tolerance, the fall energy is incorrect and the test is invalid.
- Interval between consecutive drops on the same sample: 300 ± 15 s.
- Pass/fail and validity rules:
- If a sample breaks at the knot the test is invalid (one repeat allowed); record if repeated knot failures occur.
- If rope slips through clamps by more than 5 mm when broken, the test is invalid.
- Results and reporting:
- Report peak force during first drop to 0.1 kN.
- Calculate dynamic elongation for the first drop to the nearest 1% using: Dynamic elongation = (Hmax − H0) / (H0 + 300)
- Record number of drops sustained without breaking and whether breakage occurred at the knot.
Applications and who uses it
- Manufacturers of dynamic ropes for design verification and CE marking.
- Test laboratories performing standardized mechanical testing and certification.
- Certification bodies and conformity assessors ensuring products meet EU safety requirements.
- Procurement officers, mountaineering equipment retailers and safety officers who need objective performance data for single/half/twin ropes used in climbing, mountaineering and alpine rescue.
