Overview

EN ISO 17871:2020/prA2 is the draft Amendment 2 (2026) to the international standard ISO 17871:2020, developed by CEN and ISO/TC 58/SC 2. This standard specifies the requirements for quick-release cylinder valves used with gas cylinders. The amendment refines specifications, updates references, and clarifies protocols for the type testing, performance, and marking of quick-release cylinder valves. These valves are critical components in gas handling systems, especially in applications requiring rapid and secure closure.

Key Topics

  • Quick-release cylinder valves: Function as closure mechanisms, ensuring safe sealing and rapid activation or shutdown in gas cylinder systems.
  • Scope clarifications: The amendment emphasizes that only the closure function of the quick-release valve is covered; any additional integrated functionalities are regulated by other standards.
  • Integration with other standards: Updated references to the latest versions of related standards such as ISO 10297:2024 and ISO 17879:2026.
  • Type testing and compliance: Revised test methods and acceptance criteria for:
    • Hydraulic and leak tightness testing
    • Marking and traceability requirements
    • Pressure and endurance testing
  • Regional requirements: Notes specific to fire-fighting systems, and other regional or application-specific criteria, referring to standards like ISO 16003 and EN 12094-4.
  • Marking: Requirements for permanent, legible marking by approved methods, ensuring clear identification and compliance.

Applications

Quick-release cylinder valves are deployed in diverse industries that utilize gas cylinder systems, including:

  • Industrial gas supply: Ensuring safe delivery, closure, and isolation of gases in manufacturing and processing facilities.
  • Fire-fighting systems: Integral in fixed fire suppression setups where rapid discharge and reliable sealing under emergency conditions are critical.
  • Shipping, oil platforms, and windmills: Used in areas where reliable gas containment and emergency pressure relief are essential, considering environmental and safety challenges.
  • Medical and laboratory environments: Quick-release mechanisms provide operational efficiency and safety when handling medical gases or conducting sensitive experiments.

By standardizing performance, testing, and marking requirements, EN ISO 17871:2020/prA2 helps organizations:

  • Achieve regulatory compliance for gas handling equipment
  • Enhance safety and reliability in gas cylinder operations
  • Reduce the risk of gas leaks and associated hazards
  • Simplify procurement by referencing harmonized international specifications

Related Standards

The amendment to EN ISO 17871:2020 aligns and cross-references several key international standards in the gas cylinder sector:

  • ISO 10297:2024 - Gas cylinder valves - Specification and type testing
  • ISO 17879:2026 - Gas cylinders - Valves for compressed and liquefied gases - Specification and testing
  • ISO 23826:2021 - Gas cylinders - Pressure relief devices - Specifications and testing
  • ISO 16003 and EN 12094-4 - Additional requirements for valves used in fire-fighting systems
  • ISO 15996 - Specifics for residual pressure valves (RPVs)

These referenced standards form an integrated system for the safe design, operation, and maintenance of gas cylinder valves, underlining the practical and regulatory value of EN ISO 17871:2020/prA2 for stakeholders in the gas supply chain.

By following EN ISO 17871:2020/prA2, manufacturers, system integrators, and regulatory bodies ensure that quick-release cylinder valves meet the latest international benchmarks for safety, reliability, and compliance.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through
ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee
has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations,
governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely
with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are described
in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular, the different approval criteria needed for the different types
of ISO documents should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the editorial rules of the
ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 (see www.iso.org/directives).

Add the following Note at the end of clause 3:
“NOTE 3 Certain specific requirements for quick-release cylinder valves for fixed fire-fighting systems
in addition to those that are given in this document are specified in ISO 16003 and at a regional level, e.g. in
EN 12094–4. Certain specific requirements for residual pressure valves (RPV), in addition to those that are
given in this document, are given in ISO 15996.”

4.1  First paragraph
Substitute the first paragraph with the following paragraph:
“Quick-release cylinder valves shall comply with all requirements of ISO 10297, ISO 17879 or ISO 23826
(except Clause 8), as applicable, unless this document expressly allows differing requirements or stipulates
additional requirements.”
4.1  Last paragraph
Substitute “ISO 10297:2014+Amd1:2017, 5.2” with “ISO 10297:2024, 5.2” and “ISO 17879:2017, 5.2” with
