Copper and copper alloys - Determination of antimony content - Part 1: Spectrophotometric method
This part of this European Standard specifies a Rhodamine B spectrophotometric method for the determination of the antimony content of copper and copper alloys in the form of unwrought, wrought and cast products.
The method is applicable to products having antimony mass fractions in the range between 0,001 % and 0,1 %, or greater by appropriate modification of the mass of the test portion, the volume of the test portion solution to be taken for the extraction and the cell path length.

Overview
EN 14937-1:2006 - published by CEN - specifies a Rhodamine B spectrophotometric method for the determination of antimony content in copper and copper alloys (unwrought, wrought and cast products). The method is intended for antimony mass fractions nominally between 0.001 % and 0.1 %, with straightforward adjustments (test portion mass, aliquot volume, cell path length) to cover higher concentrations. The procedure is based on extraction of pentavalent antimony into isopropyl ether and spectrophotometric measurement of the chloro‑antimonate–Rhodamine B complex.
Key topics
- Scope and applicability: Antimony determination in copper and copper alloys (drillings, chips or millings ≤ 0.5 mm thickness), sampling per ISO 1811-1 / ISO 1811-2.
- Analytical principle: Conversion to pentavalent Sb, extraction into isopropyl ether and formation of the chloro‑antimonate–Rhodamine B colored complex for spectrophotometric measurement (~550 nm).
- Reagents and materials: Analytical‑grade reagents including isopropyl ether, hydrochloric acid solutions, hydrogen peroxide, cerium(IV) sulfate (oxidant), hydroxylammonium chloride (reducing agent), and Rhodamine B dye. Standard antimony solutions for calibration are defined.
- Apparatus: Ordinary laboratory equipment, refrigerator (for low‑temperature steps), and a spectrophotometer with suitable cell path length.
- Procedure essentials: Test portion dissolution, oxidation/decomposition steps, selective extraction, phase washing, addition of Rhodamine B and immediate absorbance measurement. Includes blank and check tests and calibration using standards prepared in copper matrix.
- Quality and reporting: Method validation data (repeatability/reproducibility from interlaboratory study), blank correction, calculation of antimony mass fraction using the measured Sb in the aliquot and the test portion mass, and required test report contents.
Applications
- Quality control and acceptance testing in copper metallurgy, alloy production and casting.
- Analytical laboratories performing composition verification of copper alloys for electrical, plumbing, and industrial applications.
- Material inspection for compliance with product specifications and regulatory limits for antimony.
- Research and development where trace antimony levels need routine, cost‑effective assessment without instrumental techniques like FAAS or ICP.
